Smithy's Mk1 Vrs..... Slowly but surely

Thought I'd add a project thread about my Mk1 Vrs, so here goes....

After finding out I was going to be a dad, I decided to sell my stage 2 Mk4 golf Agu for something bigger and "dad'ish". So I bought an E46 BMW 325 msport saloon. Lovely car, but it was thirsty, boring and the boot space was ridiculous! So I decided to go back to my true love....the 20vT.

This is the only pic of her when I got it. 112k, full service history, stage 1 remap, fox alloys and some upgraded speakers - other than that she was pretty standard.

First thing was to get rid of the awful alloys, so they got swapped with some 18inch Rs4 reps off a mate, in a lovely purple colour  :wonder:

These were black within a day of being fitted!

Much better

I searched through the shed to find an old forge recirc valve off my golf, found it and ordered a service kit from Forge - containing new seals and a modified piston. Then paired it with an S2000 cone filter for some noise under the bonnet. I'm going with a green and black theme with the car so I painted the cream plastic around the filter so it didn't look out of place in the bay

Then I removed the PCV pipes after finding the Y-pipe had split....

20130925_131002.jpg

And then got a heat shield off a mate of mine, mounted the catch can on the side of the shield as a temp measure until I had time to make another can, which is still waiting to be fitted  :wall:

20131110_141716.jpg

As you can see, the pipework for the catch can was pretty messy after fitting the heat shield, I've ordered new piping and it's sat on top of my toolbox staring at me whilst I'm at work, waiting to be fitted!

Next up was to make the thing louder and free up some ponies, so I had a custom 2.5" cat-back system made up...

IMG_263296433671001.jpeg

And then added a 3" decat pipe into the mix

IMG_263246489487651.jpeg

The difference that decat pipe made was unreal - my golf already had a full system on it when I bought it so I couldn't compare the difference they made. I was a happy chappy with the exhaust fitted, lovely note, which barrbles but isn't overly loud - just how I wanted.

The chrome on the front grille was bugging me so it was then time to give the old girl a nose job and paint it black.

I will eventually make a wide mouth bumper, remove those gash drl's, and fit my smaller plate to it.....may also have the bump strips colour coded at the same time.

A couple of clean pics after a wash at work...

Next up I bought some lowering springs off a mate of mine, and chucked them on the same day.

The back end was a tad on its arse now...

20131228_093403.jpg

The front end hardly dropped at all, so coilovers are now on the to-do list and hopefully will be my next purchase.

And the final mod for this post....after much researching on wheels that suit the octy the best, I had my heart set on some BBS CH's....my wallet did not agree unfortunately  :( But I managed to find some wheels I haven't seen on an Octy before - MG ZT Hairpins. Found someone breaking a Zt near to me, and got all 4 with tyres for the bargain price of £90.

20131210_204238.jpg

The wheels then got adjusted to fit the Octavia - playing with spacers and machining the centre bore to fit over the hubs.

20131219_150859.jpg

The spacers have now been changed for some nice hubcentrics, 10mm all round.

I then removed the curbing from the wheels, and began to paint them.

I'm chuffed with how they come came out, will be even happier when I get some coilovers and sort the front bumper out.

I'll update this as and when I can, got a few plans for it but working 6 days a week and having a 4 month old to contend with has slowed progress down somewhat lol

Edit: Sorry about the links, god knows what's gone off there!

  • 1 month later...

Been doing some buying, found a big boost leak in the intercooler piping, so ordered myself a wellycooler and some pipes...

20140220_174416.jpg

I've ordered the alloy bends and the map flange but they haven't arrived yet, going to widemouth the bumper when I fit the cooler.

Also fitted my coilovers, need some bigger spacers on the front so the tyres clear the adjusting seat and I can drop it some more

And lastly, slowly racking those miles up....

Cheers for the comment Rob!

I thought that might be the case, could u pm me a link of any details u come across please. I will have to change some things as I need a bam inlet as I have a strut brace which will restrict me going over the top of the engine!

This is looking awesome!!! It looks a tidy car and I love those wheels on it. How did you go about making the bore bigger? Did you just use a die grinder until it was big enough or get them done properly? Will be keeping a eye on this

Cheers mate! The bodywork isn't fantastic but it's being resprayed later in the year :) I just took a grinder to the wheels mate until the bores of my spacers fit nice and snug

Keep your eye on it later this month pal!!

Slow? This is moving very fast. Love reading threads like this too.

The car looks awesome! Wheels really suit it. Are they the same fit as the octy or did you have to get adapters?

Look forward to future updates!!

That's what I'd of done too lol, can't see the point in paying for the wheels to be done when you can use a grinder lol. Ooh sounds interesting I will do. Have you got any pics of your old golf? That sounds like it was a nice one

Also removed those gash drl's whilst the bumper was off, gave the lower grilles a quick coat of paint to spruce them up and repainted the top grille too. ( didnt mask the old badge as my new 1 should be here this week!)
