1.4tdi Fabia 1 45mpg?!

Featured Replies

Has anyone got any idea why I am only getting between 40 and 45 mpg with my `57 plate, 3 cyl, 1.4tdi?! I`ve had the car since last september and tried driving it gently at around 60mph on my daily commute of 25 miles each way (all motorway). I`ve also had the car fully serviced despite being told it was done prior to buying it in the hope that the air/oil/fuel filters were affecting it! Nothing I have done seems to work. I know the book mpg of approx 75mpg is rather optimistic but I was hoping for a minimum of 60mpg otherwise I may as well have stuck with my pug 306 2.0Hdi which consistantly returned 50-60mpg without even trying! At the moment the cash I`m saving on road tax I`m spending on fuel!!! By the way, it has done 35000 miles so I`m assuming thats classed as ``run in``! HELP!!

Coolant temperture sensor

Car's running cold so injecting more fuel to compensate

Cheers Jase. Big/expensive job?

Last year my Fabia (petrol) was returning around 25 mpg. I noticed that the temp needle was all over the place; showing normal one minute then dropping to cold the next.

Turned out the thermostat/temp sensor housing had basically fell apart internally. New unit bought, fitted by Mechanic, and all is back to normal. Car now returning around 35mpg(ish).

Cost me around £40 for the complete thermostat housing inc. sensor, and around £40 to have it fitted. So in the region of £80, job done.

Not saying this is the problem with yours, but worth looking into.

Cheers Jase. Big/expensive job?

No bud reletively simple. Around 20minute job if that and a litre of coolant.

If your confident you could do it yourself!

Will be similar to a coolant temp sensor change on a 1.9tdi there should be a guide somewhere?

Sorry i can't be more helpfull (on the mobile)

Very helpful. Thank you both. I've been working nights all week but I've got a few days off next week so I'll give it a bash then. Hopefully my aircraft fitting apprenticeship will enable me to have the skills to do the work myself however I have been off the tools for over 10 years (desk job) so I might have to ask a proper fitter to help me out... LOL!! Thanks again guys.

Hi I have a 1.9Tdi 2003 fabia elegance estate which returns about 54 urban and 65 motorway regularly. I had it remapped by a company down south about 7 years ago. I can give you their name if you're interested. I seem to remember it cost about £125 but I got that money back in fuel alone. The cars performance is also incredible. The bhp went from about !00 to 133bhp at the wheels. Its smooth as silk and pulls like a dream.

Hope this helps

regards

Graham

If you've got the name of that company that would be great Graham. Worth a shot. I'm changing the coolant sensor this week so we'll see if that makes a difference but I may just get it remapped anyway. Cheers.
