Skoda Fabia 06 HTP ready for M.O.T.

Featured Replies

I have a Skoda Fabia HTP classic 5dr,  06

One owner from new before me.

I bought it from Evans Halshaw with a warranty that covers non wear and tear. LAST MARCH.

After 3 days of purchasing the battery needed replacing, rear windscreen wiper needed electrical work.

After the repairs were done it stated that this vehicle had also a 50 point free health check after repair with dealer.

I have had a leak in summer which was a master cylinder which I refused to get done by dealer, NOT TRUSTED.I

got my mate a long time taxi mechanic who fitted it for £40 including part. NOT £120 by main dealers.

I have 2 months left on warranty and the MOT is due in 4 weeks, I am wondering to approach my mate who now has a garage who did the repair for small money and let him pre inspect the car and put it through. If it goes through with small problems he gets the service job on it 4 weeks after.

I am scared to take it to dealer who sold me it as I don't believe they have even done anything to it apart from clean it up and put a couple of new tyres on, which two of the last MOT pass was an advisory worn tyre and a small leak on exhaust.I ha

ve done 4000 mile in it since I bought it on 10 months.

I am inclined to get rid if the bill is going to be stupid enough to keep it, if I can get away with getting a taxi to work 7 times a month at a cost of 80 quid a month and no car.

And go back to getting buses.

My insurance for this year is £420 quid

Any thoughts on what the MOT could fail on,

Is it worth keeping

Better the devil you know! the MoT  is only there to keep you and your car safe for the road, keep it maintained and it will look after you. Sounds like you have got yourself a cheap fixer of cars to hand and one that you can trust. I too have a classic 06 plate.................one of the coil packs gave up today, wheel bearing the other month, that`s life, its wear and tear of motoring. They really are great little cars

Expecting a big MOT bill with a 06 car - that does not show much confidence! If you were correct, I would not think that you could get much selling a car facing a lot of MOT work. These little cars do sometimes hit you hard in the pocket, but in my experience (equivalent Polo), the costs go in fits and starts - which in the end become acceptable over the period of ownership. Sounds like you don't want or need a car and are looking for an excuse to lose lots of money - that could have been avoided prior to buying this car.

I waste money on cars, this I know, but I like my cars a bit so accept it. My current car is a 2011 Audi S4 and it hides in the garage most of the week and just gets used at weekends and holidays as I force on myself the inconvenience of using a bus to travel to and from work. By the way, I have just put it in for its first MOT a bit early - used my local Audi dealer, £35 for MOT, "health check", roadtest, wash and valet, not too bad a deal, except it looks like they exercised it a bit and wasted my fuel economy, but why not, it is a fun car to drive!

Anyway, buses, or some of the people on them smell!

Well it went through MOT and failed on the advisory from last year.

Having bought this item was serviced when bought. HAS NOT BEEN SERVICED.

£95 quid for a new exhaust front pipe.

I tested it at Halfords, guess what.

£95 quid to fit it and the part.

My mate can do it for £60 quid.

But guess what, If I take it and get it repaired outside Halfords, I have to pay half the retest fee of MOT.

In my liking is the biggest con in motoring.

If I had time, I would do it myself.

Maybe I'm wrong or have been lucky, I've always used main dealers for MOT as VAG, well VW and Seat and Audi  at least, will carry out an MOT currently for £35 if the car is under 10 years old - and include a health check, wash and mini valet. Now, in recent years, when my wife's 9N Polo failed for on/below wear limit front tyres (I am a fool as I cleaned the brakes a couple of days previously), then two years later failed for 1/2" missing on a rear spring, they almost urged me to get it sorted out and back to them within the day so that they could complete the test with no retest fee. I thought that the MOT rules allowed/stipulated that that was how things were meant to be done.

I think the M.O.T. is the biggest con in motoring. Now that cars are more reliable, mechanics are in a dead end service. I think the recent changes and charges of M.O.T. and stricter guidelines is just another excuse to keep the governments kitty lined up as well as keeping garages ripping people off with repairs they don't need.
