Looking for a new printer

Featured Replies

This is a problem with virtually all printing devices. It's the classic model used by the razor manufacturers - give away the razor and charge steeply for replacement blades.

And whilst you can refill toners with some success, the manufacturers seem to be getting wiser to this meaning that they don't always work. They also seem to supply printers with part filled cartridges so it won't be long before replacements are required and as your link shows, a set can cost more than the device itself.

I should add that I fell for this with my current Lexmark (who may be the worst offender in this respect) and with the novelty of our first full colour device combined with the kids full page colour homework submissions it was barely a matter of a couple of months before new cartridges had to be ordered!!

Anyone know which manufacturer are the least worse offender for this practise?

Full set of Epson standard inkjet cartridges for me is £45, long lasters £70, pattern standards £18.

I just avoid printing anything out like the plague -  Passport photographs excepted !  .

Standards are lasting me a year at present.

Kyocera toners seem to contain 2-3 times as much as Epson, HP, or Lexmark, yet cost less.

I was going to buy a Kyocera this weekend, but just been hit with a big dental bill that is going to eat up my birthday money - and the wife's ILR visa is due in 6 weeks, nearly £2,000 into the governments pockets for no justifiable reason.

Hmm  Wife or printer..  wife or printer???

Lexmark are pretty bad on refilling. They're big on loss leaders to make thw printer cheap.

HP just won a court case to stop other companies producing copy carts.

I got compatibles for my samsung cheap as said 2x3000 page for £25.

Kyocera printers do cost quite a bit more up front but they're pretty servicable and parts are reasonable so they can last a long time. I think maybe they even use wax inks but I'm not sure. You'll tend to get drivers for popular office printers even when they're ancient.

i.e. lots of people still using 20yr old HP Laserjet 4 printers.

Somethin like this will probably be our next - http://www.ebuyer.com/522330-kyocera-fs-1325mfp-a4-mono-multifunction-laser-printer-1102m73nl0

I'd like to sort both as she is a lot cheaper to run than an electric blanket, and I get to eat Chinese takeaway every night if I want.

If you want a face to face visa application appointmwent - because you dont trust them not to lose all your priceless documents - the gits charge an extra FOUR HUNDRED POUNDS!!!!!
