Intercooler flushing

Featured Replies

I'm thinking of using wd40 to flush the oil out of my Octavia intercooler following a bust turbo (now replaced). If I spray plenty in the outlet hole will it wash the oil through and what are the problems if any?

If anybody has tried it can you say how it went.

I put petrol in mine and shook it about then left it to sit then emptied it out.

Take intercooler off completely

Petrol is a good idea

I used carb cleaner which also worked well :)

Oh and theres no issue hosing it out aslong as you let it dry completely

As with DanHam.

You need to remove it and give it a good washout with petrol, once it's cleaned and dried out a bit you can expect a few bangs and rough running as the remaining petrol vapour is burned.

Just read your other post re oil in intercooler.

You'll always have a small amount of oil collect in the intercooler, it's not necessarily the turbo oil seals failing but the engine oil breather gases that are recovered and burned.

Check the level of oil on your dipstick to ensure it isn't over filled and have a look in your air filter box where the vent pipe goes in, you'll probably see a black mess and it is this that is drawn through the turbo and intercooler with clean air.

Perfectly normal unless you have the elephant mod.
