Plastidipping the engine cover

Featured Replies

So I'm going to do the grill surround in black, but will be doing the bump strips at the same time to make sure all the black matches. Got me thinking about putting some colour in to the engine bay, anyone plastidipped the engine cover before? Can it withstand the heat OK?

I wouldn't but not because of heat, plastidip begins to peel with the slightest scratch in it and an engine cover is somewhere that's gonna get scratched a fair bit when you're lifting it on and off and stuff. I'm going to be wrapping in a decent carbon textured vinyl that's good when it's warm and is a bit more hard wearing than plastidip. If you did plastidip it you'd want to seal it afterwards but then again that ruins the matt look of plastidip

You could always try...

I really don't think plastidipping the bump strips is a good idea, unless you are going to put some real effort into keying the plastics and using some serious primer. Otherwise the slightest nudge may result in an ugly mess.

Hydrographic films come in 1m squared pieces so will be canny pricey to do the engine cover

SHould add it's just over the sizes as I checked thus wrapping it

Agreed, but it does look cool :)

Looks beautiful when done in the right amounts and in the right places but god does it look horrendous when people go overboard with it

So whats the best thing for bringing the bump strips back to an even black all the way around? Don't want to colour code em. Not a huge fan of carbon look stuff, it looks good, just not for me, and I want to add a splash of colour to the engine bay. obviously silicone hoses will do that but can't afford to do em all right now.

Depends how faded and scratched they are. There's alot of dressings that help but it depends how cream crackered they are. Painting is a pain because you'd need to sand them smooth really and sanding plastic to get a nice finish is a true PITA! Wrapping is an option as you can get plain black in both matt and gloss but to wrap them properly you'll need the strips off.

Oh dear, I now have a hard-on for the carbon dipped alloys... they would look soooo good!

There was a place by me doing a full set including refurb of them all for 300 quid I think it was. Very popular with the Audi crowd

MMM... oh dear, only had the car a week, the V5 isnt through yet!

Same as me then mate lol. Had it 2 weeks- remapped, new double din pioneer head unit, canister bypassed, combi valve bypassed, SMF conversion Friday, new stock backbox on, new rear lights cluster, new front indicator housings, new wipers and I'm waiting on some new vinyl coming to wrap the centre console surround...oh, and a full interior valet followed by more scrubbing by myself and most of the engine bay degreased and cleaned...lol

You are a busy boy! If only i had the time and money!

rear lights 99p on ebay, indicators 8 quid the pair, replacement backbox 40 delivered, a tuner owed me a favour on the remap and a valetter owed me a favour as well lol. Only thing of real cost was the head unit but got that in the sales and the SMF conversion but they both seriously had to be done
