Mk1 Fabia 1.4 16v Clunking under my feet :|

Featured Replies

Any ideas on what this could be..it happens when i turn sharp corners (not at speed), as i straighten out there is a bit of a clunk which ive noticed is more apparant on the passenger side

Steering rack worn?

Could be irrelevant but on my Alfa Romeo 156, an indication the lower ball joints on the wishbones were worn is an audible knock as well as being felt through the steering wheel.

Drop links?

The passenger hub and cv joint collapsed a while back but the entire hub assembly and cv joint were replaced along with drop link and bottom ball joint.

Steering rack..erm..possibly - apparantly when i had it there was a problem with the starter motor hitting the steering rack (although this could be Bsh*t)

what!

IIRC the starter motor on the 1.4 16V engine is at the front of the engine bay! heck i took mine out to drop it in oil (was squealing/grinding on start up as it was getting stuck)

seriously?

what makes u think that?

I would suggest top mounts, Mine was giving a sort of  " bong"  Sound when I entered my drive way on almost full lock, and in 1st gear, These are a bigish rubber ring with a bearing in the middle, located on the top of the suspension strut,on the underside.Steering was much lighter after I replaced both sides.

Is this on the front or the rear, I may be getting this wrong but all i can picture is the rear bump stops :|

If i picture the front suspension strut i can see the hub assy which connects to the suspension strut..which then has the shock and spring is it further up?

Broken springs are also common, check them up top with a lamp.

This is a strut top mount...

The strut damper rod bolts into the central hole and the other holes are where the mount is bolted to the strut turret on the car. You have to take the strut off the car and compress the suspension spring using spring compressors so you can then remove the damper rod nut and get the mount off.

Lee has a good photo of a TOP MOUNT BUSH.  You are on the right track, strut, coil spring, and sandwiched between the top of the coil spring and the inner wing, (if you lift the bonnet. the 3 nuts to the left and right of the strut top side is the outer fixing for the top mounts). You will need coil spring compressors,  No problem, get them on  Ebay, handy to have, You will also see if your coil spring is broken (bumping up on curbs really damages the springs).
