My journey learning to ride a motorcycle. . .

Featured Replies

If it's new, is it not the 750X? (The naked one being the 750S)

Or is the one you're looking at a used one... or the restricted model?

Went to have a chat to a salesman about bikes yesterday, fairly positive discussion. Then I did some insurance quotes.... I think I'll stay with older bikes for a while. Not cheap to start with.

Why not cheap? What bikes were you looking at?

I've never paid more than 400 quid for bike insurance. Riding since i was 17 n im 22 now.

Never had full sports bikes though. Cg125, sv650s, vfr800 vtec...

All immaculate condition though tbf, so value on insurance set accordingly

  • Well Matt can have his thread back now as I've done it. Part 2 passed, clean sheet. Full unrestricted A licence.    https://www.facebook.com/284613831635661/photos/a.376667989096911.86182.284613831

  • Well that was fun. Was going to start a thread of my own on this but I'm sure Matt  won't mind if I catalogue my bike licence journey here in his thread.  I did my CBT today, was a little bit anxiou

All that build up and it was done in 8 min Passed with 0 minors, pretty chuffed. Done a little exploring of Uxbridge, seems ok, just need to keep an eye out for speed limits not knowing the area.

Welcome back CFB!!

Hardcore... The s version can be ridden on an A2 licence because it's 47hp. The X is apparently 51hp so needs restricting for A2

The one I rode, am looking at, is a 62 plate with only 5k miles on it. It's immaculate..

The previous owner had it a year then traded for the 750 because of the extra 5hp !?

I don't mind, if I buy it, he'll have saved me £2k over a new one and less of a loss come time to sell.

Maybe because I'm classed as an old crusty by ins co's, fully comp is only £130 which was a nice surprise. :)

I did an insurance quote for a 750X and it was £700+.

Did a quote on my mates Hornet (52 plate, good condition) and that was £350.

Given I don't even have a licence yet, that's not too bad. So I'll stick to cheaper, older bikes for the most part right now. Don't wanna go buy something new at this stage.

Doubt youd really be able to feel the extra 5bhp Tbh aha.

51bhp should be plenty to potter around on really.

Ah thats good! I guess its classed as quite a low risk bike tbh.

Im 22 n my vfr 800 vtec costs me about £350 i think. So its a bargain compared to a car.

The real world difference between them is more likely to be an increase or better spread of torque rather than the 5 bhp. I had my old r1150r chipped and a different exhaust and although it was only a few more bhp the difference in throttle response was very noticible.

I thought there might be an increase in torque so had a google, its only 5lb ft more.

Although it might be spread better through the revs like you say.

Those bikes actually nearly have as much lb ft of torque as they do BHP.

Even the dealer was bemused by the chaps change.

As said, 5hp isn't going to make much difference on this type of bike, not to me anyway.

Hardcore, that's a surprise. The Hornet has more power and has a reputation as a bit of a hooligan tool so should be more.

Apart from the lack of wind protection for longer trips, it's a stonking bike. We've had 2.

A T reg naked and a 2002 faired. Still preferred the naked one though.

On a side note, have you seen the new CB650F?

Echoes of the 400/4 with that 4-1 exhaust. :)

I was so glad to get out of work at lunchtime today, it's been hell all week!

What a perfect way to de-stress.

Pub lunch, followed by a couple of hours on the bike.

I'm pleased to report that my suspicions about the way it handles motorway speeds was correct.

Round town the engine feels like the twin it is, a bit lumpy.

As you get to 60-70 the engine smooths out nicely.

Still enough get up and go too.

One thing I found very difficult is to get the proper balance of throttle to rear brake when attempting to ride at walking pace in traffic. The clutch doesn't slip unless from a standing start. It won't do it if you've slowed down and try's to keep driving, because the clutch doesn't slip as required, or disengage until stationary.

From a standing start, in drive, it just digs in and goes. Surprised the chap in the M5 at the lights ;)

Well, up to 50 anyway!

The fly screen looks like it can be fitted in a higher position, I'm 5'11", which might help with the buffeting at speed.

I did discover that its better to change down manually before an overtake, to get the drive immediately, rather than relying on the DCT changing down when you open the throttle hard, even in sport mode.

Handling wise it's neutral and predictable in the twist bits but I found the ride quite hard on the front. On the plus side, there's very little dive under hard braking.

The rear preload needed winding off a notch or two as well. No adjustment on the front but usual notched collar on the rear.

The positives far outweigh the couple of negatives so my bank balance now has a larger dent in it.

I'm picking it up on Saturday!!! :) :) :)

Woo congratulations! Youll have to get done proper pictures up when you get it (: im sure youll be happy with it!

Big fan of Hondas myself. Theyre built well arent they.

Cheers! Ahh I'll be fine. Just taken a few lumps out of my neck lol.

Did they get the big ugly lump at the top? :p

Yeah, always had Hondas, apart from the Tiger.

Nice one. You can get some really decent rides in during march if you put an extra layer on and pick the right day. I used to look forward to them as it also signified the start of the biking season and the roads are often quiet mid week too. Still dreaming.....

Ahaha! Feels like they did at the moment!

Yeah id rather have Hondas over other bikes tbf. Its just if they do a bike matching what i want at the time though tbh

Far too much grit on the roads round here atm :(

After reading through this I've noticed that a fair few of you guys pay a lot for insurance! do you all live in high risk places? or am I just a grumpy old sod? (maybe the latter then). now commuting daily on the bike, hooray for heated grips and seats.

Speaking of high risk places. I came across this link the other day. Found it quite interesting.

Im a B (:

First bike (05 honda cg125) was £400 to insure when i was 17.

Compared to a car, where they wanted roughly £3000 for a 1.2 polo. I was well chuffed haha

My 110cc Honda scooter cost about £120 to insure. The 650 Versys is about £180 fully comp. Mind you, I'm 43 three and live in a low-risk area, but only passed my test in December.

I think it's just a lottery. I pay £140 per year for 10k miles, protected no claims, business use, legal cover and pillion cover. My ride a £15k bike and live in Leeds so don't consider it too bad.

But what bike?

Must be a complete lottery as I  pay  £97 fully comp for a modified (and disclosed) 1050 Triumph Sprint, 2 years NCB with datatag. but payed over £120 for my 125cc AJS Raptor, go figure.

But what bike?

BMW r1200rt

Mine is kept in a metal shed which a lot of insurers don't count as garaged (as not brick or concrete) so it's classed as kept on the drive.

Quite a sensible bike though arent they.

Perhaps more of a crash risk on a gsxr 600 as far as statistics are concerned haha

Im in "Refer" :D

Cant remember what my insurance is exactly but I think it was £118 Fully Comp Z750R. Only 1 year NCD because I let my full NCD lapse and have to start again.
