Elephant Mod Question

Featured Replies

I've got all the bits ready i.e catch tank etc but looking over treads on here there appears to be 2 different ways of doing it.

1.  Running catch tank in-line

2.  Venting catch tank to atmosphere

I know what the difference is so my question is what are the benefits and/or drawbacks of either way.

Not got one, but I'd go for the catch tank.

Why? Well, 26+ years in 5-0 left me with more than my fair share of dealing with RTC's where motorcyclists had come a cropper by sliding on oil, diesel and other road detritus. I'm not saying that the elephant mod venting down under the car would be the cause of an accident, but I guess it's just my respect for other road users.

I think you will find there will e a good mix of proponents for each.

I put mine back to normal as I felt conscious that I was venting oil vapour all over the road.

I want a catch can that you can run inline so you get the clean air in but dont throw it over the roads

Tinking of cleaning / removing the egr valve and fitting the elephant mod on SWMBOs vrs

If you went through the effort of a catch tank. Put it inline.

If you havnt got a catch tank put straight under car. It dosnt vent a noticeable amount of oil. My cars dipstick hasnt moved in 2000 mile. And less than 100ml of dripped oil over 2000 mile isnt allot ;)

Thanks guy, in-line it is then.  I was 95% going to do that anyway just wanted some advice as to the benefits vs draw backs for in-line vs venting to atmosphere.

I had the catch tank and had it with vented from there. Still breathed heavily which made a mess of the engine bay still.

I ran it inline for a while but the bracket snapped on the catch tank, so have put it back to standard for the moment.

Ye it ain't much, but if you have a few thousand people doing this it soon adds up, so no thanks.

I think everyone is getting confused a little bit here.  Both options involve a catch tank. One option involves going back into the air intake via a catch can hence in-line because all you've done is put a catch tank in.  The other option still involves a catch tank but doesn't go back into the air intake but rather vents through a little breather filter.  I don't mean running it to the floor and letting oil drip out everywhere.

no i dont think they are, most choose the option of putting a silicon hose from the engine breather, down through the engine bay and let it vent / drip to atmosphere

engine > atmosphere

the 2nd option is a catch inline so it goes engine > catch tank > inlet

i've played with catch tanks before on my wife's HDi citreoen (boo hiss) one time forgot to empty it and it made a lovely big poo pile on the driveway under the atmos vent, with the VRS.. straight hose out, no problems, no issues no leaky, and kept the hose elbow for MOT just in case, you have to consider all that oil going back into the system isn't going to be good for heat transfer on your intercooler which is likely to cause the whole engine to cause more pollution than the bit of oil vapour and steam from the cc vent

I have been thinking about this elephant mod as I have done a egr delete so the only oil goi I g back in the inlet now is that pipe from rocker so how do I do the mod just run a silicon pipe from the rocker to to the floor ya what about a filter on the end ??

And how do I block off where the pipe would of gone 2

Any help will be great

Thanks

Buy a 19mm diameter silicon hose. And then a bung of some sort for the inlet part (I used a walking stick foot, fitted perfectly. There is a big old thread on elephant mods thats been pinned as far as I know

1x 30mm blanking cap (silicone)

1x 25-16mm silicone reducer

1x 16mm plastic hose joiner

2m x 16mm silicone hose

2x 30-40mm jubilee clips

and about 3-4 x 200mm cable ties

thats all i used, and just ran it straight out, only difference would be locating and installing a catch tank in the line that's currently going to the floor

The best way of doing it is to use a proper separator, not just a empty catch can.

This shows how a separator can works:

Im made an internal baffle for mine already but that one looks very nice.  I bet its coin.

Was a group buy going on here, was about £90 Iirc :)

But they do work very well, inlet pipework is very clean now on my VRS after fitting this.

Used one on my Evo which used to separate alot of oil, as it was running quite alot of boost you get more piston ring blow by.

I dont even a few thousand people spread accross the country would make a difference when you consider the amound of cars on thw road. Some cars have worse oil leaks than what my car vents. Stood on the drive it never leaves an oil mark
