Waiting for a 14 plate - pros and cons

Featured Replies

My spanking new Citigo is due to be at the dealer next week. If I have it as soon as possible then it'll be on a 63 plate. If I can wait 3 weeks then I can have a 'newer' car on a 14 plate.

Am I being daft wanting a 14 plate? It's my first ever brand new car so I'd like to show off a little bit, especially to my ex wife. :-)

I ordered the car on 8th October and wanted it desperately at the time. However, I've waited this long so it's not going to kill me to drive my diesel thirsty van a little longer.

Decisions, decisions...

Personally, I would wait

Like you said, you have been patient this far, whats another 3 weeks

I'd wait for the 14 plate - you might as well wait three weeks to bask in the glory of a new plate.

I would wait too.

Thanks but it would seem to be somewhat academic. The dealer's just told me that they have to register new cars within 10 days of delivery to them. Does this sound right?

Hi Prog

My wife's SE was also ordered on 8th October but is being built this week, so is not expected for another week or so. My dealer himself suggested waiting for the 14 plate. Can't wait for it to arrive as she's been carless since we sold her 10 year old KA

Rubbish what they say about registering it within 10 days. Better on a 14 plate.

That's what they told me when they received mine at the dealer although the 1st September had passed anyway so got the new reg at that time in 2012.

You could always delay it somehow  excuse I can't get to you until.....or whatever. My dealer always had an excuse ready when I asked them to ring me back on occasions and didn't, but they were on the ball though when the car came in wanting me to pick it up and get paid.

This might apply is you are taking Finance from the dealer

Think the dealer can register the car when ever they like, it's only to get its reg plate number. If you say " I can't get in/pick up the car till 01Sept " they can still register it.

Once it has been registered it cannot be de- registered

It's apparently in the small print of the VAG finance contracts. If you aren't using them you should be ok to wait.

if they keep you informed, they can hold it at the port and ask for it to be delivered later, depends if they are playing numbers games for targets

wait for it, because as soon as the new reg comes out your car de-values as it is no longer the current reg, which then has an impact on resale later

I would wait too for the 14 plate.

Its a pretty unanimous verdict fella

You should wait

Yes, it's the finance. I missed that bit in the smallprint. At least I should be driving my new car this coming week.

they just want to register it for their sales targets....

Lets face it.....six months on the latest plate is over in a blink of an eye.

If it were convenient (i.e only a few days or so) to wait for March 1st then id do it. If I had to wait 2 or 3 weeks....I'd rather just take the car; why add that additional timescale onto something youve had to wait weeks for to collect anyway. Regardless of the plate its still a new car and do you really care whether those walking/driving by on the street know it; it'll be a Feb 14 63 plate rather than a March 14 14 that is all.

Other points......

1st March is a Saturday this year...i bet alot of people will be or have decided to collect their car that day.

The longer you leave the car at the dealership the more time its hanging around in their parking bays waiting to get dinked and scraped....not saying dealers are careless because theyre not but its a greater oportunity for something to happen to it

If you are trading in a decent car for it you're risking wear/damage to your own car over the next couple of weeks that you either have to put right or take a hit on your part ex.

At the end of the day were all different and for those that want to wait fair enough but I'm more precious about getting into my new car ASAP than what plate its wearing. My car is due to show up tomorrow but all being well will be collecting on Friday....on a 63 plate.
