I guess I must just be a Luddite.

I don't drive around expecting to have an accident but if it gives you peace of mind then who am I to argue, you pays your money and takes your choice.

Agree with BossFox, I've had 1 claimed accident in my 12 years of driving, I was stationary in the road waiting for  a truck to get of my way when a car hit me from the rear.. He actually tried claiming I had slammed the brakes on for no reason thus causing the accident.  When I told the insurance company where it was and it was a DHL truck which was in my way, and they all have GPS loggers on them (I don't know if they do) and DHL could offer evidence against this, he soon changed his mind.

I never bothered until I got the vRS, but it seems to attract complete planks doing daft things. They are a bit like house contents insurance policies.... you don't have to if you don't want to, but there are plenty of forum members who wished they had bothered. As you say you pays your money....

I average two accidents per year.

Mostly non-fault.

What's the fascination with in car video recorders.

I know they're fitted to buses, coaches, HGVs, vans and the like where covering high mileages increases the risk of accidents so they're a good idea but are they really necessary to private motorists.

It might be because I'm old school but unless you doing high mileages or travelling in dodgy areas I don't see the need for them.

Or is just so you can have the footage shown on TV on those police, camera, action type programmes.

the LS430w was my second camera. my first camera (DoD 580E) captured this little gem

Fair enough Wibb, you've proved that they can work, it's a good job you had one fitted.

This is the unit I bought based on the other guys reviews - Even got hard wire fitting guide for a 2013 vRS (still need to find what I did with that and post it) and a Monte Carlo.

Here's the Monte Install with pics - Image heavy - https://dl.dropboxus...3vRSInstall.zip

Thanks. that's really helpful!

I only do 14K a year, but often drive at night, in less than great areas. I can understand why you wouldn't bother if neither applied to you.

Although I managed to avoid a collision, I had an incident where a car swerved onto the wrong side of the road at me on Hyde Road in Manchester. I'd like to think that if I had some evidence of what happened, it may be useful. In fact, that journey back from Manchester has been responsible for nearly all of my near-misses with evasive action needed. It can only be a matter of time before near miss becomes accident.

I can't open the file you linked :-( can you tell me where you got your 12v switched feed from and your grounding point. Also, did you use the supplied power lead and cut off the 12v aux plug?

Thanks

12v switched feed is from the cigarette lighter socket - as this is always live, so time / date don't reset when standing overnight.

Grounding point is a bare part of the metal chasis.

Yep - cut the 12v plug off and replaced it using crimped connectors to a 12v in, 5v out box which is fed from a blade fuse connector to the cigarette lighter socket.

PM me an email address and I'll send you a compressed PDF of instructions.

If the 12v is constant live from cigarette lighter will the dash cam not draw all the time?

If it's a permenent live, yes.

So you need a camera with a "sleep mode".

Thanks.

I have found a couple of switched live fuses so I'm all set now, just waiting for the bits and pieces to arrive. Quite looking forward to fitting it all up now! :D

I purchased two Road Eye In-car 2.5" LCD HD DVR 1280*960 Digital Car Cameras from Amazon nearly a year ago and although at the cheaper end of the market am very pleased with them as they have already proved an accident was the fault of the third party as their insurance company insisted it was knock for knock meaning I would have to pay my access.

Gazbull17 I purchased these cameras (1 front + 1 rear) as I have friends in the police force who informed me that they had been called several times to what was strongly suspected as staged accidents deliberately caused by EU drivers wishing to make false claims for whiplash injury but they found it difficult to prove until a lady driver had a camera on board which when viewed helped prove the staged accident, so for such a low cost and peace of mind I find it a great investment, oh and I am also 'Old School'

Dash cam has arrived... Transcend drivepro 200 and I'm impressed with it. The bracket is a little large but very secure. Picture is good and the way you can get pictures and files through an app on your phone is great. Wiring all done....just made my own 12v socket and separate fuse. The computer software is very basic which is a little disappointing.

Hope I never need it for insurance purposes but it's piece of mind and it will record the awesome scenery here.
