worried owner, fabia vrs Ron

Featured Replies

Hi guys I'm sure this topic has been exhausted by now, I've just purchased an 11 plate fabia vrs which I plan to keep forever, I've never gave a second thought to fuel, but noticed 98 fuel is recommended.now living in a ****ty place called Whitehaven in Cumbria, the only fuel I can find around here is 97 which I filled up with today, has anyone any idea if this will be ok long term it was esso supreme I used, also has anyone any idea where I can get any 99 Ron fuel around here as my local Tesco doesn't do it,,, thanks a lot...

dont worry mate, I live nearby (cockermouth) and 97 is fine.... I tend to use either BP or esso, (obviously thats all we have! lol) or shell 99 if I make it to Penrith ;)

97 is the "minimum" it has to be, most of it is probably 98 anyway ;)

when I went to czech in 2012 though the "super" was 105 RON, and the vRS loved it! lol...

Rallye green, black pack :-)

Now I work in a more rural area and it's a long commute so cost is now an issue I've had to switch to standard 95. It runs fine on it if it's from Shell or Murco just slightly reduced power at the top of the rev range. I did try a tank of Morrisons but it hated it.

The garage at Penrith mate is that the one on Victoria road?

http://petrolprices.com

Do not stress over it, but fill up as often as you can with better than 95/97 ron,

and maybe fill a couple of 10 litre cans with the good stuff  for when necessary.

Do you know how to vent the tank,

at present prices, the difference to me is a Full Tank,

then Vent it and it takes £10 more, so an extra Gallon and a half. So get more of the 99 in when you can.

Reducing the power is not something that is concerning me, at UK national speed limits its hardly noticeable, if you can notice.

i just would not drive it hard on 95 ron for any period of time.

Is venting moving the little slide on the neck in the filler to get more fuel in? Good old google

Yes, maybe listen to the air come out and do it 2 or 3 times, and get fully filled up.

(anyone seeing you might give you odd looks, Loving your car so much!!)

only do it if about to drive say at least 30 miles after,

& not if away to sit the car parked up in hot weather, or even in the sun.

(The pressurised system needs expansion.)

The garage at Penrith mate is that the one on Victoria road?

just off the A66 roundabout, past the esso, shell on the right :) but seriously 97 RON is fine :) my old vRS had a tuning box on it, and it would run up to 10 on 97, but wouldn't run above 4 on 95! :o

Yeah it's just something that prays on your mind , could it be quicker, ill stick to 97 Coz I ain't trailing to Penrith

TMC on 10 ??? did it run ok

I know someone who has only tried up to 7 due to what was read on the net ?

yup , it ran fine... BUT we did a RR test with 2 vRS's one turned to 7 on the TMC one turned to 10 , and it made no difference to the power at all, both were circa 200 bhp....

Would the ECU not detect that the engine was knocking and adjust the ignition timing accordingly?

We've run our 2011 CAVE almost exclusively on 97 and it's been fine. Runs relatively poor on 95 tho.

yes, thats why you loose power on 95 RON the ECU reatrds the ignition to prevent knocking.

Esso supreme 97 it is then

last "super" fuel test I saw, the esso stuff did better than the BP stuff.... but our local esso is the most expensive around!

when out on meets, I have filled up using sainsburys own brand super, and my car loved it! it was almost the same price as standard unleaded too ! (much cheaper than the deisel)

no sainsburys near us with fuel either though :(

It is dear but there's only that or bp and I've heard bad things about bp ultimate so it'll do

Live near whitehaven also and have posted about this problem before. Have been pestering the station manager at the Whitehaven Tesco to stock 99 ron momentum but with no luck so far even though they have told me they do have a spare tank that could stock it. Very frustrating!!!! Have also spoken to the marketing manager for UK petrol stations at Shell but he has confirmed that there are no plans in the near future to fill the hole in their coverage in west Cumbria.

From Whitehaven the nearest Shell is actually Millom but it is an independent and in the middle of nowhere so not sure how 'fresh' the 99 ron is - have used it once with no noticeable difference to my usual source at Penrith and it is a fun twisty road to have a bit of a blast on.

My tactic has been to fill up with venting as described above with Shell 99 and then when the tank is half empty ( or half full ) to fill up with Esso 97 in Whitehaven? This way the average ron won't dip below the required 98 though I admit that I am a bit OCD about this and that 97 is probably fine. Incidentally the Esso in Whitehaven is now the cheapest source of 97 ron locally - cheaper by a few pence per litre than the BP Pelican garage and the Texaco Bigrigg super 97.

the texaco in marypot is quite cheap for 97 ..

honestly though guys, I have now covered 65,000 miles in 2 vRS's using mostly either the BP or ESSO, and its fine !

  • 2 weeks later...

neither of you have bought (or know who has bought) my old vRS have you ? rally green, no mods, 10 plate 50k from border cars lillyhall? They said it was sold to a "local" !

i always use 97 from the local BP's, i did try Shell nitro once and its the only time the car has misfired

if you see a white 61 plate with crappy winter alloys on then dont forget to wave, even if its the finger i dont mind :P

lol.. seen you before mate ;) not seen your crappy winter alloys though! lol.. mine is running octy I elagance wheels with my winters at the mo ;)
