Really silly question about dipstick!

Featured Replies

Hi,

Have just bought a 62 plate hatch with 2.0 CR diesel engine.

My silly question is how do you remove and replace the dipstick (I've only been driving for 50 years and have in the past maintained my own cars so I should not need to ask this question).

The dipstick has an orange plastic head with 2 clips which seem to locate on the rim of the guide tube. It is very difficult to get the stick out if these clips are engaged and equally hard to get it fully in again (I assume it must be right in with the clips engaged to get correct reading).

Is there some knack to doing this?

I am concerned that too much force will break something.

Thanks

David

It should just pull out without too much effort.

There are two slots for the clips to seat into. Make sure they are lined up.

You need a wee bit force to remove and replace it but the clips do give a bit so you should fine.

Mine takes quite a bit of force to remove too, don't be shy give it a good pull!

Just wait till you try to top up the oil, I need feckin mole grips to get the filler cap off.

bit of force and a wiggle. Same when I check the oil in my 61 plate caddy

+1 top half of cap is snapped lol

Thanks for the replies, sounds like I just need to be a bit more forceful with it!

Well I've just found another answer. Previously when I had difficulty removing and replacing the dipstick the engine was cold. Tried it today with the engine warm - no problem, reasonably easy to remove/replace! Presumably the heat softens the plastic - the manual does tell me to check oil level with engine warm - I just did not think it would make any difference to the ease of using the dipstick!
