New mot checks

Featured Replies

I tested a diesel XF the other day, the left bank of cylinders had a cannister beneath it , the right one didn't and then both pipes went into a DPF, I wonder now that was it missing a cat? I've seen loads of those from underneath and can't remember what they're usually fitted with.

I can see this being a common problem among testers as all cars are set up differently by the manufacturers. Or you might only see the car once a year so come MOT time if something has changed you wont notice

The only way that you could get any consistency would be for the exhaust configuration to be shown on the Vehicle Specific Information (VSI) that the tester has access to when conducting the test.  On the current system the VSI only generalises about the model of car and does not go into specifics about the actual car that is being tested.

Ideally it should say something like 'one cat per bank of cylinders with a centrally mounted DPF', whereas at present it could say 'Check for a DPF as one may be fitted'.

Maybe it'll all change when the new computer system comes in next year.  At present we are using terminals that look as though they date back to 1995 and are on dial up for the online connection, we only got rid of the dot matrix printers a year ago.

Its going to be a MOT testers séance.  Knock, knock, knock, "Is anybody there ?"

Very strange how some modern diesels have a dpf and some dont i remember the last of the vectras 2009 mdl ,the 120 had no dpf,no swirl flaps in the manifold and had very few issues ,the 150 had the dpf and swirl flaps and had issues all the time ,just shows when looking for a new car ask the questions and work on the assumption the more it has the less reliable and less cost affective .

Not that strange that around 2008-9 Manufacturers prepared for the change from Euro 4 Emission Standards to Euro 5 in 2010.

& cars Type Approved after the date in 2010 had to be of Euro 5 Emission.

Now in 2015 Euro 6 Emissions come in and Manufacturers are readying for that with new cars and engines in 2013-14,

then after September 2015 new EU Type Approved Diesels and Petrols need to meet the Euro 6 Emission Standards.

Will there be a tap test to tell if the DPF and cat casings are empty?

These people at this euro regs i want to punch in the face!

All things invented to meet these regs totally **** up car's

Egr's

Swirl flaps

Dpf's
