Buying a MK1 MX5? Am I mental?

Featured Replies

They usually have A/C as well

How many of the AC systems are actually still working and holding gas pressure is another matter :)

Never really understood the need for AC on a '5 anyway - just drop the roof

Some random trivia on it

Just done the research and yea Eunos had an LSD where mk1 uk cars did not (no idea why).

I guess it's a combination of the Japenese wanting loads of extras adding and also the insurance companies in the UK not liking them.

Just open the roof!

Think he might know that trick by now! :D

Just open the roof!

I do!

Just pointing it out though as some people with soft-tops do seem to prefer A/c though...   though they tend to be MGF or SLK buyers

I've had both mk1 & 3 MX5s and would have another Mk1 like a shot, the mk3 was ok but I used it as a daily for a while and it didn't suit my motorway commute. My other car at the time was a Caterham 1.8 Roadsport. I somehow doubt that I'd get that past SWMBO again having both of my cars 2 seaters!

Nice work! Well, you managed it once so I'd be proud of that achievement :)

I like the inside of the Mk3, but think you need a Mk3.5 for the outside to work, especially the headlights. And they should just make the Eibach spring option the default! They look so high as standard.....

Well done and am dead jealous!

Been thinking of getting the Mk1 one for a while.

They cheap, plenty abt, classic insurance,

best roadster in the world - plus very reliable!

I have 2 kids (need a 3seater - lol) - so may have to wait that bit longer :-(

i have two kids as well, and a wife...   so i just have three cars:-)

Makes perfect sense when you put it like that!

I do!

Actually air con is a great thing to have on a softtop - it can be absolutely baking hot in the car with the roof down, especially at slower speeds so AC does make a lot of sense, on hot summer days I'd love to have it.

To the OP, do your research and DON'T buy the first one you see! There are so many out there that some time and patience will pay off getting the best car.

They're a little overrated in my opinion and will feel pretty slow on the road compared to even modern hatchbacks unless you thrash the knackers off them (which luckily they love!). My advice is upgrade the suspension, get it fully aligned a set of four decent matching tyres and just enjoy the handling. Bolting on a turbo or supercharger does give more power but many say it loses some character after it, and needs setting up well to perform reliably.

Jap cars tend to have more toys /leather etc and often less rust. If it has a viscous LSD then expect it to be worn out and basically open by now, it's the Torsen LSD you want.

Oh and the pop up lights never get boring!!

Yeah, good choice. No worries with an import either - £118 insurance for mine incl. work usage! Import ones are better spec'd - AC, PAS, e/w... less rust... better choice!

Another classic which i used to have back in 1993 was a 1989 mk1 mr2 and that was a fantastic car it looked great in white and what handling it had you could put a cup of coffee in cup holder and go fast around a roundabout and never spill any haha it was the best car i ever had wish i had kept it as it only had 13500 miles on the clock.

And also the gearchange was like a knife through butter although to get a good one now  is going to be pricey i also had a mk 2 mazda mx5 but still preffered the mini mid engine rear wheel drive.

Had Mk1 and Mk2 1.8 MX5's. Both were great but the MK1 is best IMHO. I had a Mk1 1.8 RS it was great, lightened flywheel extra chassis bracing from the factory. They aren't the fastest cars by any means but certainly one of the most fun filled driving experiences i have ever had.

Mk1 will always be cooler cos of the pop-up lights too. ;-)
