Buying a MK1 MX5? Am I mental?

Featured Replies

Right, i've been offered a really great Red MK1 MX5 for less than £1000. Paintwork faded but no rust anywhere, sills were replaced last year and arches all spot on.

Surely a great little weekend car to have for this money right? I know its a hairdressers car but i've read a few times that the MK1 was awesome to drive, the feedback and everything is great for a blast round country lanes.

I'm thinking keep it for a few months and then if I like it go down the turbo or supercharged route and really make it fun. Insurance is a whopping £150 for a 3000 mile a year classic car policy as well!

Any thoughts chaps (or chapettes!)?

Surely you know what you are doing and what you want, so 'whats the worst that can happen'.

Enjoy it.

Cheers sk4gw. Think I just need convincing by someone else.

At the end of the day its just sailed through the MOT with only an advisory about coroded springs so its not a massive gamble really.

Not according to our DHL driver!

They a brilliant fun. I am thinking of getting one too. Loads of them about, well made, indestructable mechanicals and a terrific gear change. Just make sure you don't jet a jap import unless super cheap and in top notch order. I would not worry about stupid hairdresser jokes as those in the know think they are terrific. Surprised at the insurance though :/

A little off the sides please... :)

Just kidding, I had a later (3.5) one and it was terrific fun on the twisties.

You get less strange looks if you've a half decent bit of totty to decorate the

passenger seat with while you drive around though, at the time I had mine I

had very long hair which didn't help with the image.

Sold mine and my vRS to pay for the Audi in the end.

Haha. It is an imported eunos roadster. I thought the import cars were better spec than the Uk ones?

Very good fun,.  Drove my mates one when the mongrel was in for several months of rebuild work / waiting for parts.

1.8 130bhp no weight in the back and a limited slip diff = RWD fun!   (This was a Eunos Roadster too - I think they have a bit more "pep" than the UK cars)

Go for it.  Ihave had mine for nearly 16 years now and still wouldn't change it.

Thanks Jason, very nice 5 dude. It's the 1.6l engine but still with a viscous diff apparently? Mechanics seem bullet proof so hopefully should be good fun. I'll see if I can bring that 23 year old Mazda red paint back upto scratch.

This kind of look is great on a mk1.

I owned one for over 2 years and would have another tomorrow!

Given that a decent alfasud is as rare as rocking horse poop, I've been thinking about an mx5 for a bit if weekend fun now that my kids have got their own cars.

Do it! If not, I might be interested myself :-)

Had a Mk2 for a little while a few years back and it was great fun.

We bought a Mk 1 MX5 brand new when we lived in Cyprus (pre-kids, obviously). OK, it's not very powerful but a beautiful car to drive, just so well balanced and ergonomically fantastic (with a gorgeous Momo steering wheel); the gearshift is an absolute treat as well.

Assuming it's been well looked after then go for it. Don't feel that you have to turbo or supercharge it; it is so much fun bog standard.

Cool, cheers guys. I've slapped a deposit on her and hopefully pick it up this weekend!

Excellent - post up some pics when you get the chance!

Jealous! Off to the Classifieds I go :-D

I just spent 20 mins on eBay looking lol. I think I'd want a supercharged one though.

Buy one, then decide :-)

Can always be sorted later, plus you know how well the conversion, fitting etc has been done.

  • Author

Yeah I'll definitely do the conversion myself I think. Apparently the Subaru TDO4L turbo conversion is worth doing, pretty reliable as well.

I used to have a supercharged Rover Mini which was a lot of fun. Nice noise but a turbo will produce the big power.

Get buying then chaps!

Just done the research and yea Eunos had an LSD where mk1 uk cars did not (no idea why).

Yep, the Eunos got a different spec level entirely. Different target market dictated that, I suppose.
