Got WiFi working

Featured Replies

Have got the WiFi to work using the 3C0 035 730 D bluetooth module. I am using the following coding "020000000100010000000101" the last bit seems to control the function of the wifi, although it isn't labelled as that in VCDS 12.12 will have to wait for an update for that. It took a while to get it working as the wifi option only showed up in the menu after I had coded it and left the car for a while.

Last bit of the puzzle to get working as I can now get data connectivity back to my phone while in rSAP mode to receive emails, use maps, etc.

Many thanks to Ed for getting the shark fin fitted to my hatch, a huge pain in the arse compared to the estate as it turns out and for routing all the cables.

I had exactly the same problem and found that the last two bits needed to be 0101 to get WiFi working properly (found that on a German site using Google Translate!).  You are right that the VCDS long coding helper is not quite as up to date as it needs to be for this module and Ross Tech also told me they don't have a current update to the coding schema at present.

To get the connectivity you set up the data access point using the details for your airtime provider (so it uses your data allowance), and then that creates a WiFi hotspot, which you can connect your phone to, even in rSAP mode (as well as other passengers' phones, so be careful with your allowance!).  I looked up the data access point settings on line for my provider (O2).

The world would be in a worse state if it wasn't for Ed of the East!

I don't think Ed will be wanting to do any more shark fins in hatches.

I am I have left the coding with 0101 at the end and see if it's still working tomorrow. The penultimate bit in the long coding helper is for drive train but I'm not sure it it really is for that as it won't accept anything other than 01 or 00 so we shall see.

I've set up the APU and it was all working when I left it earlier.

Yes pretty sure the long coding helper needs to be updated for D modules. I'm not sure if bit 9 is correct either in my case as there is no help for that at all so have left it as 00.

Exactly what does this "wi-fi" do?

The module basically has a wifi hotspot in it I believe. It piggy backs the phones data connection and allows it to be shared over a wireless connection. Sounds as though you have to somehow configure the module with your providers APN settings, it must then use the bluetooth connection to open the data connection to the net. Id have thought this would only be possible with an rSAP compliant phone as its the only way the modem in the module could connect to the net.....maybe not though.

Kind of good but you'd need a decent data bundle!

Yes it only works in rSap mode for the connected phone.  And definitely has the potential to use up the data allowance, especially if others connect to the WiFi hotspot created, or you use it for digital radio etc.

Well done. So if i turn my phone into a wifi hotspot for others to use in the car (anyway all others have 3G on their phones), whats the point of this? Who will be using my hotspot? It it was AUDI's Google Maps with Live traffic etc etc which needs Internet connection, fine, but this, why?

My module supports both rSAP and normal BT.

Someone explain! :)

Your phone will have no data connection while in rSAP mode, I've done it so the phone has a data connection to receive emails etc. Also I found the D version for the same price as the C version so why not get it.

Same here

Yes in that case sure. I'm not connecting to rSAP anymore (normal BT) as SMS/calls stays in Columbus, unless I'm driving in mountains and have a better reception with rSAP. Also in normal BT, i get to use Internet.

Keep it up ;)

I guess this module is for Audi's etc but it can be fitted to a Skoda and made to work but not have the google functionality. I have this module and the reason for me is, I live in Germany with a German mobile number but travel to UK often, I have a UK pay as you go on 3 which I then connect to the wifi and connect my German phone and ipad etc so I can receive emails while in the UK.

Just in case you don't know, shorter SMS can be copied back to the phone when in rSap mode (although I have found the copy sometimes fails with messages longer than 1 standard message).

This is a potentially interesting topic for me. Please correct me if i'm off the mark here but can I possibly use my BT kit (some how) to connect itself to my iphone 4 (which it does now for normal BT calls) & at the same time use it as a hotspot for my passengers on a long journey? This could be a handy bonus tool for a trip up north I have planned soon.

If this is the case what do i need to do via VCDS to enable this & via maxidot? Also how do I know if my phone can be toggled between rSAP & 'Normal BT' & will it mean if in rSAP mode I cant use BT or does it means they both work? Sorry for all the questions but it's hopefully something a few are thinking of asking.

P.s. I have this module fitted to a Bolero H/Unit - 7P6035730L

Basically no I'm afraid. The module you have does not support wifi hotspot and in any case iphones wouldn't connect by rSAP, which is a prerequisite for the wifi, even if you had the correct module.

RSap takes over the sim and so the car is effectively the handset. Apple doesnt like this! so you currently connect by hands free protocol whereby the phone retains control of the sim but limits the functionality to calls and phone book syncing.

Could someone please explain how to do the above on my Octavia Mkll. I've got rSAP mode sorted on my Galaxy S4, but am muddled about the rest, including how and where to put this long code of numbers in, and whether I need to use VCDS. Many thanks in anticipation.

Assuming you have the 3c8..d bluetooth module, you wil either see WiFi in the telephone menu of the maxidot already, or you will need to code the module (using VCDS as you say) by changing the last two bytes in the coding to 01 01.

Once that is done, you will need to set up the access point in the settings menu, using the access point of your data contract (google it), and then turning the WiFi on in the WiFi menu will allow the module to act as a hotspot for all devices in the car (including your own phone for internet radio say, which would otherwise not be able to connect to the internet when in RSAP mode).

In my case with a s3, I had to do nothing to the phone whatsoever, other than make it visible for pairing through the maxidot.

Just note though that you will be using your data allowance for this, even though it doesn't register on 3G watchdog or similar, so beware the potential cost.

I have also left bit 9 as 00, I'm not sure what it controls. I'm inclined to leave the coding as is as it's working. Since I'm not sure how long it takes for the coding changes to take effect. I my case it was definitely longer than 10 mins.

I assume that the reason some of the other modules support 3G but don't have WiFi is so they can work on a carrier that only has a UMTS (3G) network e.g. Three in the UK which don't operate an old GSM network.

Yes my thoughts exactly.  Was a bit less than 10 minutes in my case though.

Hi

I have a Superb MkII (2013) Elegance model.

I have my rSAP working, but I dont see any WiFi  in the menu?

Do I need to do something to obtain that option?

Also what you mean when referring to the  code "020000000100010000000101". Is that something I can input somewhere to enable the wifi functionality?

regards

It depends exactly what bluetooth module your car has installed.

I'm not sure where they are on a Superb but you can find it, then it will have a part number printed on it. Otherwise you can use VCDS (a particular brand of diagnostic cable) to tell you all the modules your car has installed.

If you have either a 3C0 035 730D or 3C0 035 730E then it's possible to change the coding of the module to enable WiFi functionality using VCDS. This is what the code "020000000100010000000101" was in reference to, each bit will turn various functions on and off.

There is a map here http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/224376-vcds-owners-map/ that might help you find a local member with a VCDS that can take a look for you but I wouldn't expect the car to have the correct module from the factory.

Hope that helps,
