Clutch Change to SMF step by step guide? Sticky?

Featured Replies

dont DO IT!

i put this exact same kit on my mk4 golf & it fubar'd the bearings due to the smf not absorbing the vibrations etc. caused damage on input shaft bearing also

you are right

Hi,

Well its a tried and tested conversion on here? ECS do a kit so cant be that bad, the 02j gearbox was originally fitted with a SMF in the vr6 and abf 2.0 16v gti mk3 golfs so cant see why it would be a problem?

anyone else have any thoughts on this?

cheers paddy

He is right, the gearbox is in danger to many many failures.I stripped many boxes and you have no idea how many fragile moving parts ,sincros, bearings can just easy fail.

When I had my clutch replaced 4 years ago I was also tempted to SMF conversion but I did't.

The driving style has a huge sense after SMF conversion...and anyway since I've joined this forum I know several cases of 1st gear fails on SMF kits

Right on a DMF the vibration damper is In the flywheel on a SMF the vibration damper is in the friction plate. Neither system is any better at reducing vibrations. Perhaps the reason the G'box fails on SMF converted cars is they tend to be tuned cars running higher torque and bhp and so will be driven harder. Not to mention they will be older as no one changes a clutch just for the sake of it, they're usually worn out. So car must have a few miles on it. Just my opinion but I've seen more failed DMF than failed g'boxes so that tells me they're a s@£t idea as g'boxes where fine before DMF was invented.

I also stripped 3 MMT6 boxes after smf conversions & the input shafts were shot. Also stripped 2 vag (1 x 5 speed & 1x6)& both had identical shaft failures. Crank bearings were bad also. It's hard to get folk to listen to reason sometimes as smf conversions have only been sold for a number of years,& I personally know forum owners in cahoots with well-known companies that sell these kits, giving them kickbacks.(none on here that I know of anyway). Everytime a member disputed something with hard facts against smf conversions, a few (same 1's every time) discouraged the interested party from taking his advice.there's tons of money at stake so a lot of folk don't want the true facts and the damage done,to be known openly. Trust me. It's not good for your pride n joys

Ps: dmf get a bad name unnecessarily. The average dmf will last a minimum of 60k - 100k.

If you're tuning a car,you should be putting in an uprated dmf.

I know 2 of Scotlands leading transmission specialists & they think smf conversions are only good for a certain number of cars and vans.

Another thing. Folk were saying skoda were fitting smf conversions as standard. This is 100% untrue. If you don't believe me,phone skoda. Some even want a waver signed when and if they do 1

Well I remember saying that the VR6 and ABF 2.0 16v golf gti mk3 had the same box and single mass. There gearboxes were prone to failure. Additionally, as stated before there is no difference in absorbing vibrations between SMF and DMF.

If you drive the car light a t"£t dumping the clutch something may fail not saying that this is what people do. I did the conversion because I don't see the point in putting £1200 into a car i bought for £1250? False economy me thinks.

their even lol

Think the 2 clutch DMF v SMF threads need merging mods if your reading could be useful.
