URGENT: ECU replacement

Featured Replies

Evening everyone.

Having a few issues with my fabia atm and seem to have it down to the ECU due to the faults as i have the exact same fault codes as these guys on the following links...

This is becoming a big issue as i rely heavily on the car to travel a 120 mile round trip 5 days a week. Had the fuel pump relay replaced and egr valve blanked.

I want to get the ECU tested to check if that is the issue. Can anyone recommend any ecu testers? I have found a website called cartech electronics ltd located in plymouth who can test it and also transfer the data over to a reconditioned ECU. It is a pricely sum of around £300.00 so i want to check if I'm on the right lines.

Can anyone shed any light? I'm getting desperate lol!

Thanks, Ben

All the part numbers from there ECU's have different letters at the end, for example mine is 038 906 019 NF... What do the two letters signify? Also, mine is the ASZ engine, whereas the others arent, but i imagine this will have nothing to do with the ECU?

Post the fault codes and symptoms so we can help. I haven't seen anything in your other posts that would suggest it's the ECU.

Faults are the same as in the second link mate but i'll list them in here...

P1524 Fuel pump relay

P1441 Egr valve

P3105 Intake manifold flap

P1619 glow plug

P1549 Boost

Car cut out whilst driving.

engine management light came on.

cut out when i tried to start it.

left it for 15 minutes then it started. drive faultlessly, until the next morning where it cut out again.

Plugged in and the above codes came up.

Replace the fuel pump relay and blanked off the EGR valve. Still no difference.

Did that research and found about the ECU pins becoming water damaged.

Cleaned the pins, fitted, deleted the codes, engine light went off and ran fine.

It says in the second website i posted that this lasts for a week before the same issues arise.

I'm fitting the ECU again tomorrow and seeing what is going on.

Hopefully getting it checked with a VCDS and then getting the ECU tested.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a relay or wiring problem to me. You can never rule out an ECU fault, but that would only come into play after you've checked everthing else. What year is your car?

2005.

We replaced the fuel pump relay, or do you think it could be another?

Do you think it would be worth getting the ECU tested so I can rule that out?

Thanks for your help btw

I'll take a look at the schematics tomorrow.

Once we've ruled out the simple things, you could send the ECU to someone like ECU Doctor. If it checks out OK it will cost you £40, otherwise they will quote for a repair/replacement.

For ECUs the trailing letters are an integral part of the part code - it's not just a revision code.

The first thing I'd do is check the ECU power relay and its feed from the ECU.

Usually you might just change the relay in position 15 on the relay plate, but if you have had water ingress issues then double check the pin 18 on the large ECU connector (it will be a blue/yellow wire).

The other place that suffers from water ingress is the connection box that links the engine bay to cabin. The blue/yellow wire passes through the red connector.

If it's the same fuel pump relay error I'm thinking off then its a new ecu jobby.

I bought one cheap ( advertised as broke) it's would drive fine then cut out (very dangerous) fault was the fuel pump. Guy I bought it off said skoda said it was an ecu fault. He had to buy a new ecu.

Ben give us a shout if you want to try another ecu. Will rule it out.

Thanks Baldwin, will check that.

faboka, I think you may be right.

I managed to nurse it to a mate of mine who owns a company called samtech performance. Really clued up on his stuff. Plugged it into VCDS and nothing was wrong. Had shot myself in the foot because i'd had the ecu out for a while so it had reset. So i drove away with either a fixed issue or one that was going to happen again. Luckily 100 yards down his road it cut out. Got it back and the same fault codes came up. However we tested several times, each time it struggled to connect with the ecu. So we deleted the codes, got it back home when it cut out as i pulled up, very lucky.

So sending the ecu to him, getting it tested, repaired or replaced. If it's not the ECU then i imagine it will be one of the issues Baldwin listed. So will get those checked.

I had the ECU back yesterday after sending it to the ECU doctor. There was a fault with the board, which was replaced, and guess what it doesn't work! Fuel pump wasn't priming at first, then I removed it and fitted it continuously, cleaned the pins and it started, but wouldn't rev, at all. EML light came back on with the traction control light and air bag light.

diagnostics machine won't connect to it at all so I'll be in contact with ECU doctor tomorrow to see what they have to say.

This really is becoming a pain in the arse now.

Baldwin, the wiring came back as all being okay from an auto electricians I had it in at. They said the issue seemed to be with the pins on the ECU. I figured that's what the ecu doctor were going to say the issue was, however they did not. So i will query them on it tomorrow.

Thanks for everyone's help so far.
