Removing window scratches

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Took off a little too quickly on a cold morning before the windscreen had demisted and as I was wiping it with my hand my signet ring stone left two small but noticible scratches on the glass. Nothing major but annoying when my eyes focus on them. They are not deep scratches and barely register when I run a thumbnail over them.

I've done extensive searches as to how these might be removed. I'm thinking of trying jewellers rouge, a powder which you mix into a paste and is used by jewellers to remove scratches from watch faces. I know people have used this successfully on windscreen glass. Just wondering if anyone in the Skoda family has had a similar problem and what their solution might be.

I know there are lots of kits out there which use compounds with a rotary drill to get wiper scrapes out of glass, but that would be a sledgehammer to crack this particular nut.

Many thanks in advance...and no...I don't intend taking a claw hammer to the problem either to get the windscreen replaced : )

A.

PS - some time since I've been on the forum, but two years into ownership and the Superb ranks as possibly the best car I've ever owned.

I've had similar small scratches from a watch strap. A windscreen replacement company took the scratches out in seconds using 3M Finesse-it light cut compound.  I guess any similar light cutting compound will do. I've seen white toothpaste recommended as a scratch remover on the internet but I was warned against it because it has too much grit in it. Good enough for our teeth but not our windscreens

As above really. Jewelers rouge always worked for me when I had scratches in windows I was fitting. Use in small amounts and don't go crazy.

Brasso or toothpaste with a soft cloth. But be VERY gentle and if the scratches are not removed easily and quickly stop immediately or you will make it worse. If they don't come out then methinks professional help required.
