Do the tyres on a vRS have to be the "XL" type? looking at rainsport 3's 93y if that helps.

They don't have to be iirc but it adds a bit of rigidity to the tyre wall

Spec wise no you don't need "XL" but like essexocty said it give abit more stiffness to the tyre.

I always fit "XL" tyres. I think every bit helps with all these potholes appearing everywhere on the roads,

but, at the end of the day its down to personal choice and funds of course.
