Good Routes Round The West Highlands And Skye ?

Featured Replies

Going to take a trip up near Oban soon and wondered if anyone can recommend any touring routes / sites to the North of there that are worth a look ?

I always enjoy the Glencoe stretch, but what about North of Fort William and on Skye itself - as I seem to remember as a child that it was all narrow roads and passing places ?

ps Jokes involving 4x4 Octavias will be carefully ignored

:p

i know the ultimate road near there will check the map when i get home n let u know

If you have autoroute, I'll send you a route. Its a cracker! :D

Good stuff,I'm booked into a chalet near Glenmoriston (Loch Ness) for a few days next month.Could do with a few recommendations for roads/runs etc up that way.Its a shame to say it, but I know England/Wales better than my own country when it comes these things! I'll blame that on the fact I worked there for a few years and did most of my travelling down there.

Cheers

Hugh

OK, so I can't email you :(

I've uploaded it here so you can download it. Hopefully that should work.

Thanks Jon

That route looks a bit of a beast. I'll see how we can include as many chunks of it as possible.

I'd love to attempt that sort of drive in the middle of January in the 4x4 as I had great fun in the Legacy around Glencoe at the start of this year !

I was up Arisaig/Mallaig way last year and the roads are great coming out of Fort William.

Until it turns single-track and you meet an oncoming fish lorry from Mallaig, Yikes!

Most of the roads are quite good in this area and I know of a few quiet ones where you can enjoy yourself yet be an hour from Glasgow like the A886 to Colintraive and the and the single trck B836 to Dunoon. The A886 is actually insanely fast and quiet! However in saying that you can't go far wrong up here. The A82 is a great road especially over Glencoe (bumpy mind), and I will always rember it for my Fabia passing a Merc S-class:D ! I know that the A82 up near Loch Ness is good, if slightly tight at points. If you meet the Citylink bus you might want to slow down or have a nasty scrape in your car! The roads around Fort William are good, but in essance it isn't necessary to travel up that far north for the roads unless you are really wanting to or are heading up that way. Above Fort William now the roads are mainly dueled but there is still some single track roads but I wouldn't really bother. The road to Mallaig is still single track at 2 points, but single track roads are quite good and I have never had any problems as long as you slow for corners and pay attention. However Glencoe and Oban is where you ideally want to be. A favourite of mine is heading south from Oban to Lochgilphead on the A816 then cut over on the A83 to the A82 through Inverary over the Rest and be Thankful. A blast up the A82, through Glen Coe before cutting into Kinlochleven where it's nice and twisty, before joining the A828 south towards Oban. It's a nice loop and the scenery is good too

ah, my old stamping ground.

learned to drive on those roads around inveraray.

sniff..........

Thanks all.

Must try and work out what kind of job / business I could do that means I could live in the highlands. I'm always getting drawn there...

Not really as I would like, but here's a list I think I originally found on EVO.

I have been working on a dynamic one, thus pop in your target area and see what comes up...but somebody suggested Briskoda and I got distracted...will get back to it soon I hope.

Url for 190+ roads all over the UK

Just remember the A82 will be a bitch at this time of year with caravans, tourist coaches etc so avoid it if you can by taking the minor roads !

The road to Ullapool is quite a blast, and I think you can cut through to it from either Invermorriston (or Invergarry).

The road to Kyle is pretty decent, good fast sections.

The A82 is O.K once your passed Luss on Loch Lomondside and if your through Tarbert your sorted. You can usually go for mad overtakes passed caravansif your confident or stupid!

I made sure that we ended up on a lot of the roads that you suggested - one way or the other ;) - A82,A85,A83 etc. Did various 'scenic loops' and dropped down past Loghilphead and round to Inverary and also up as far as Inverness.

Now then:- I've found out that a fully loaded 4x4 handles and rides brilliantly on those roads (we car shared for a couple of days with friends so were 5 up for 3 days) and I'm guessing that the KW2's will give a similar feel when unladen.

Even managed a full tank (430miles) at 37mpg because I found that the ride compliance and reduced roll (with all the weight in)meant that you could carry so much speed through the corners without braking.

My respect for the Octavia and Scotland has jumped up another notch again. :bttt:

So you liked the various routes that were put forward? :D

I certainly did, Stanley :)

To be honest you are right though - out of season you can pick any A road north of Glasgow and actually enjoy driving at whatever speed.

May have an unwelcome 'envelope' in a couple of weeks though. Bikers at Scotch Corner on the way back were talking about a speedtrap just as the A1M south started, so I took it easy. Unfortunately, it was set up where the A1M ended and became the A1 again...

Any ideas which tech the double freestanding tripods placed behind the Police Car (but copper in the car) are ? If its laser then I'm hoping its less than 91mph... If its camera then I did stomp the middle pedal before the trap as the Wolfhound will testify.

No problem glad you enjoyed them although who couldn't. I'm hoping to get some miles in October up there but we will see.

Well I'm off up there at the end of the month.... firstly up to John o Groats!!!! and then make my way down to Fort Wiliiam, Glasgow and then Edinburgh... the A82 is fantastic until you get down towards Loch Lomond area....

The A9 is the opposite, you are to busy looking for the camera's and Police!!!! .....

A traveling Honeymoon :D
