NASCAR-style wheels?

Featured Replies

Here's an unusual twist on the "Will these rims fit?" topics - would any of you wheel geniuses be able to help me crack this one?

First thing you need to know: I'm going to be modifying my arches and fitting bolt-on ones to allow for wider wheels / tyres, so that gives room for manoeuvre - however, the car will eventually be lowered 40 - 50mm.

I've been having a long hard think about what to buy this summer, when I came across this picture:

Those wheels / tyres are awesome. Obviously those particular ones are not street-legal and I could never have something like that on my car, but would there be a way of creating a similar illusion? I am useless at getting all the wheel & tyre measurements to match up, so that's where I need help.

I'm thinking of deep dish rims (9jx15) with high-profile, wide tyres (255/65/15). The rims would then need a lower offset to push them outwards, away from the suspension and towards the new bolted arch (e.g. ET28 - compared to STD spiders, this would be 15.4mm closer to the suspension, with a 35.4mm poke).

Now I can guarantee I've probably ballsed the maths up, but that was more of an example than anything. The other issue of course... would 15" rims clear the brakes?

Basically, I'm looking for chunky and wide... but not stretched.

If any of you wheel mathematicians could give some input, I'd really appreciate it :)

Minimum 16" to clear the brakes along as the offsets right

from what I see....first thing you must do is wide body. Those wheels have big negative offset

How do you plan to modify the arches? A little roll and pull won't help. You'll need to cut them away to get the desired look.

How wide are the bolt on arches?

I'd mock the arches up first and see what room you have then that'll give you more of an idea as to what et you can run with wider wheels

I'll be chopping a big chunk out - none of that rolling business. Everything on this car is full commitment or nothing :D

I'm not sure how wide the arches will be - they are just universal ones (will probably need trimming to fit properly). Judging by pictures, I'm guessing 3 - 4cm of extra width.

Atm I'm not after exact measurements, etc, I'm just after ideas on sizes (what extremes others have managed) and opinions on whether the "effect" I'm after can be achieved. I'm aiming for chunky-looking race wheels, but don't want to end up with ones that just look chunky, like they belong on a tractor :(

You'll need at least 16s to clear DS3s with 312mm discs.

As to the NASCAR rims, start at http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series.html and you should be able to find who makes the real ones (available in black for racing or chrome for show) (and yes I just might be a Redneck  ;) ).

as above... need the space for brakes,

unless you were willing to reduce down to 256mm brakes,

in which case you'll get 15'' rims on, as mine is on tdi boggo levels...

Could be a whole lot of trouble as you may have to chop into the rear doors as well.

Have you ever done a proper wide arch conversion before?

It is a whole lot of work and very time consuming.

I don't think it'll get that bad tbh - I'll measure everything up first and test fit before I start chopping. If it means serious botching (i.e. having to touch the door) then I won't do it full-stop.

Atm I'm looking at 8x16 rims on 225/55/16. Not as fat as I'd like, but still gives the desired effect without causing any real problems.
