PCP mileage allowance - advice please

Featured Replies

My Citigo is on a 5k a year PCP.  Initially this was ideal as my husband works away all week and I needed a car for after school runs, the odd shopping trip and weekend days out ('cos my car is nicer than his car!).

I work part time and it's literally round the corner so I don't need to use the car for that but yesterday they announced they are thinking of relocating the business and it'll be a good 12-15 miles away (AAARGH!)

This means, potentially I'm going to be putting around 90 miles a week on the car which is going to take me over that 5k threshold.

Can you change your mileage allowance and if so will this significantly increase the payments?  I reckon I would change to around 8k a year to give me a bit of leeway.

Any advice much appreciated.

I guess it depends on what your plans are when the pcp is up?

If you are going to buy the car I wouldn't worry as whatever mileage you do is pretty irrelevant. If you intend to trade the car in you don't need to worry either. Yes, it will be worth a touch less with the higher miles but not by much and if you trade it in the miles won't make any difference to the agreement either.

If you hand the car back the mileage will make a difference but it might be worth working out the excess mileage charges - about 4.4p per mile - if it's not that much just pay up at the end of the agreement.

As Markyg says.. its only very specific circumstances where mileage will be taken into account

If you choose to "hand back" the car after the half-way point of the PCP

If you put stratospheric mileage on it to the point to its worth less than the balloon payment and you want to hand it back instead of trading in for a new vehicle.

Worst case it works out at £44 per 1000 miles over the agreed amount... but if you intend to either buy, or replace the car with another in 3 years... its a non issue.

Thanks guys!  I do remember the salesman mentioning something like that but the only thing in writing was the mileage limit and the 4.4p.  I feel better slightly less panicky now

As mentioned it should be OK with the excess mileage charge. However just check your own charges on your contract. Make sure they are similar :)
