Rear Brakes Binding / further advice

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Re- brake binding. I have taken the calliper off to check and clean. Pads were Not seized anyway and the piston seal is clean & not brittle. (New rears fitted in Aug 2010).

Is it worth me trying to re-wind the piston? (I don't believe this to be seized?).

How likely is the handbrake mechanism INSide the calliper, to be the cause????

Advice gratefully received.

I would certainly wind the piston back in. Make sure you clean the piston first though and also give it a smear of good quality grease. I always use silkolene race stuff.

There is a chance the handbrake is binding but an easy way to check this is to remove the brake calliper then give the disk a spin with the handbrake off (obviously car jacked up). You might get a bit of shoe rubbing sound coming from the disc but it should be easy to move by hand.

Hi goshow. The handbrake mechanism is inside the calliper. Not drum & shoes. You had a long week? No worries, thanks for the reply. I do not have a rewind tool though I can get one off ebay for less than £10.

if you can make it go from free to bind whilst jacked up (use foot brake)   try cracking the bleed valve if it's then OK it may well be a  faulty flex pipe
