Brown Cream and no Oil

Featured Replies

Hello thanks in advance..

I have Octavia vrs tfsi 2007 with 40,000 miles on clock

I know these engines use a fair bit of oil but i topped it up just after the new year, now it is below the min line on the dipstick.
I drive to and from work 5days a week which is about 5 mile there and 5mile back i travel too and from the girlfriends maybe twice a week which is 25 mile each way and every weekend im out with the car club which is 30 mile away eachway. and its not like i drive it hard (much only when out with the car club)

And also noticed this last night and took pictures today its like a latte coloured cream on the cap and thick on the inside of the engine should i be worried? ive heard it could be head gasket failure i've never had this problem with any of my cars (touch wood is nothing serious like this)

Probably just the short journeys and cold weather causing condensation buddy.

That's a lot of mayo for short journeys! I had a few cars that get a small build up, but never that bad!

If it was mine, I'd be looking at having a compression and pressure test done....if it is the head gasket it'd be better sorting it now than having the engine completely go...

I'd be tempted to go for an Italian tune up...

Warm the car up, then give it a really decent push through 2/3/4th gear a few times. It's also worth cruising at a higher speed for a little while as well- you'll want to be out for 30-40 minutes in total.

See what it looks like after that?

When you do this the oil gets hot and the condensation evaporates and then the oil wouldnt look creamy.

Id probably get a pressure test aswell just to make sure its not the head gasket.

Does the temp gauge go higher than normal?

will give this ago tomorrow

and nope temp stays at normal

I agree, get pressure test done to eliminate poss head gasket problems, then go for the Italian tune. Trust me, I have a revo Octavia and and Alfa. I know.

Also check the breather pipes, because if they have got clogged, the engine won't be breathing properly.

Wouldn't get too concerned just yet, seems to be a characteristic of the engine if the weather is bad and you do a lot of short journeys.

If you google "2.0 tfsi oil filler gunk" or similar you'll get hundreds of results saying the same.

Any sign of coolant loss in your expansion bottle?

All the 2.0 tfsi suffer with this when low mileage and short journeys happen we get customers every week at work saying there oil caps have this problem! As long as it's not boiling over and loosing coolant hand over fist should be fine!

We get technical bulletins from audi which we have to give to customers when they say about using a lot of oil and audi say the oil usage is 1L to every 1000km. These tfsi engine love the oil!!

Hope this helps?

As said common enough on the engine in cold weather. I've seen it every winter since I bought the car.

It is normal you do even shorter journeys than me. Clean it off once a week. You won't stop it but it won't build up so badly. I reacted the same as you and had the pressure test. Mine seems to use a little less in the summer. Buy a 4-5 litre of suitable oil , which usually costs about £35 from the dealer. It is cheaper to buy in bulk rather than the top-up cans.

I had the exact same on mine today when I topped up the oil I just wipe it off .

Mines the same.......it happens every year in the colder weather.......nothing to worry about,as for the oil use some use more than others.....i had to top mine up a bit......its done 1500 miles since i serviced it.

Yep mines the same too and uses a bit of oil

wow, ive had it on mines but no where near that, when was it last cleaned thats the question guessing the last time you topped up.

mines was a tiny compared to yours. its just condensation if you arent loosing coolant.

what oil are you using??

I wouldnt be concerned about the oil cumpsumption, youve done about a 1000 + miles since last top, i put a litre in after 1,000 miles of driving.

your doing a similar journey rate to mines, id suggest ragging the tits of it once warm at least once a week.

yep January was the last time the oil cap was off when i last topped up and there was no sign of this totally clean. and im using 5w30 Shell stuff

nope no sign of coolant loss

does seem an excessive amount, mines was a smeer but then again its been a tropical winter up here in scotland.

clean it up and try giving it a thrash for once when up to temperature, get the esp to **** and boot the ****ing thing....redline it man thats what you bought it for, it has a rev limiter for a reason use it.

engines like that are expected to get floored

alternatively if thats not for you maybe you should have bought a tdi elegance **** box :)

 Aye thats what im going to do.. Thrash it that is

Spoke to the lad from a local garage about a compression test told him about the forum and that it was suggested and before i went any further he said its common for condensation and to drop the oil flush the engine (what ever that means) put new oil in and take it on a good hard drive and give her a right good seeing too as she will love it :giggle:

and just to keep an eye on oil and coolant levels.

not sure if the octavia is allowed to have an engine flush!

its something you can do on older cars but im sure i read somewhere once that newer cars simply dont need it and that by doing so they can damage the engine.

if i was you id personally just do a oil and filter change at home or garage if your next service is far away and drive it more spirited.

Don't stress out, mine looked like your photo the first time, simply because I hadn't taken the oil filler cap off since I'd bought it in Jan 08. When it needed oil in March I nearly fell over thinking my new car had a head gasket issue. Just clean it and drive it normally. Even if you do some long journeys, as soon as you start doing shorter journeys the condensation and cream return. I think it is as important to give it a bit of welly occasionally when hot to clear or try to prevent carbon build up.

Been told when doing an oil change I will need a new sump plug/bolt is this true?

It's advisable yes, the washer is fitted to the bolt so can't easily be changed separately.

Re sump bolts, I've always reused the bolt but smeared instant gasket on the mating side of the washer and never had a leak just by nipping it up.

To be honest they are less than £2 from a dealer so no real hardship to replace. That said they seem to come out looking no different unlike my wife's A class which uses a copper washer which tends to look second hand after use.
