Scout Transmission Fluid Changed

Featured Replies

Today I changed all the transmission fluids on my recent purchase a Scout - 2007 with 133.000 miles, it has a FMDSH and the service history shows the Haldex was serviced regularly. As expected the Haldex oil and filter was spotless (last changed 15.000 miles ago). as was the diff oil - probably due to having a replacement fitted at one time.

However the oil from the gearbox and transfer box was black - not quite engine oil black - with the odd fleck of silver apparent when emptying the bucket but nothing to worry about though.  There is a magnetic plug for the transfer box which was "full", which show consideration needs to be given to regular gearbox oil changes (100.000m/10yrs  ?)  rather than following filled for life.

I used genuine Skoda fluids and found the "use within 4 years of the date at the top of the bottle" rather intriguing - if they sell the same fluid as they use for factory fill .  Also wonder how much extra load the Transfer Box has on the gear oil as I've seen cars with higher mileages and still clean oil

Any chance of how to's for these? Gearbox, transfer box, Haldex and rear diff? Would be most useful to us high millage Scout drivers :hi:

I'd be happy to but they seem to be more than covered by previous post unless it was felt it would be beneficial.

not clear from the above----but the g/box and "transfer box"  (on mine  @09 4x4 "GEN1v") is separate and has a different oil spec -can't just remember--  also the tr' box doesn't have a magnetic plug.   my gearbox oil was relatively clean swarf wise but very black after only 4 years and 20K  guess it must be either oxidation or  burning,  having a Haldex filter I guess it's the previous version?

Its a 2007 Scout so has the Haldex 2 set up rather than the Haldex 4 as found in the FL model. I've not seen the later model so couldn't comment on the differences.

However, the transfer box I mentioned maybe correctly named as Power Transfer Unit ? its attatched to the gearbox and looks lke the diff housing on FWD car - it splits the drive and sends power to the rear via the propshaft. Mine definately has a magnetic drain plug fitted - looking from the O/S wheel its located level with the bottom of the inner CV joint.

As I understand it its filled via the gearbox but has a seperate oil drain as it wouldn't be drained when the one from the box is removed.

However I'm happy to be corrected as this is all new territory to me.

I've had the Haldex oil on my Scout changed by the dealer at 40,000 miles.

I also had them change the gearbox oil too at the next service as the changes were getting a little notchy.

Are you saying there is the diff / transfer box oil that needs changing too?

No, its part of the gearbox but there are 2 drain plugs to remove otherwise you'll have left old oil in part of it.

Usual gearbox drain plug - in my case a 10mm hex

2nd drain plug(magnetic) -drains from diff/PTU housing

Hope that makes it clear.

Hi, Can you remember much the dealer charged for the gearbox oil change. I would usually have my local mechanic do the job but it's easy to drain the wrong bit on the Scout.

Cheers, Mark

cheers Looks like a steel plug?  mine were soft ally with a deep but tapered hex socket  and very easy to damage

Yes, it was £60 for the Haldex and £60 for the gearbox / diff.

It's not worth the hassle of doing it yourself for these prices.

No, I have Haldex Gen 2.

My Scout is an August 2008 (08) pre-facelift model.

I believe the move to Haldex Gen 4 came in at the same time as the Scout moved to the facelift late in 2009.

Correction the PTU is filled seperately from the gearbox

Hi, I’m new here.

Didn’t introduce my self. So very quick introduction of my car. I'm octavia scout tsi owner, production year December 2008. (Probably haledx 2nd gen.) This is my first skoda.

In my near future I will change gearbox oil (by my self). Should I also drain diff oil? Haldex oil was changed by dealer 10k km back.

My question is. If the diff. fill plug is separate to fill so can I put the same fluid (oil) as i will put in the gear box? What will be the quantity of fluid for diff?

Or just drain the diff oil and when I fill the gear box oil this will do it?

Thanks for clarification of that and sorry for my bad English, hope you understand my question

Regards b.

Oh, so the PTU (or rear diff) on the Haldex Gen 2 is now confirmed to have a separate fill and drain plug, and is now known to be completely separate from the gearbox oil?

Hmm, another job then. I've had the Haldex and gearbox oils changed, but it now seems I need the PTU oil renewing too.
