Engine squeak-any ideas briskodians?

Featured Replies

Hello, just noticed that the trusty Furby VRS is making a sqeaking noise, thought it was the wheel at first but it also does it while it's stationary, it seems to be eminanting from under the bonnet but i can't locate it. You hear it most when idling. It's not a fast noise it sort of goes "squeak squeak". The squeaks are spaced out by a distance of about half a second.

I can't find a nest of mice anywhere and the fact it's quite a "slow" noise means it's probably not from the engine itself.

Any ideas, or is a trip to the dealers?

Probably one of the belts or pulleys. could give them a spray with WD40, that usually cures it or at least lets you identify where it's coming from if a belt needs replacing.

You not remember the Golf advert? :silly: Its your girlfriends earring. :D

No, she would have lost that on the back seat!

I'm not much of a mechanic, do i just spray it liberally over anything exposed in the engine bay?

Wow

Spraying a lubricant on a part of the engine that needs to have friction to work.

Is that a good idea?

Cheers

I have similar problem as well. Only able to notice when idle though. I guess it may because of the PAS..........guess.

Power assisted steering? Never thought of that. Does yours make the noise when you're stationary and NOT turning the wheel?

Yes

I'm having the same trouble. Back in the days before my mechanic brother completely fried his head on weed, he noticed it and went under the bonnet with a can of WD40. The squeak is back for me now but I can't remember which bit he sprayed...anyway I think it's the fan belt. For me, it goes away after the car's been going for about 20 minutes.

I'm not that bothered about it aesthetically, but does anyone think it's actually harmful for the car?

does it only happen when cold? Mine does it on start up, stay for abit and then just goes. I'm not too fussed about it to be honest. I may mention it when I'm at the dealers next.

Mine too does it, only started a week or so ago, quite irritating. It goes once the car is warmed up and it's not as noticable on warm days. Sounds like it's coming from the engine.

i wouldn't of thought it was the PAS as this isn't run by the belt , it has an electric pump , and it would make a noise when the steerings used

I reckon it's a rough spot on the fan belt that is rubbing against something as it goes past - this would explain why it squeaks at a regular rate about once every half second (at idling speed), and probably why it only happens when cold.

Apart from it cramping the style of the car (except mine doesn't have a lot, being an SDI) does anyone think this could do any harm or is it best left alone?
