Idiots guide to Columbus...

Featured Replies

As the title says, I'm an idiot. I have a Columbus. I need a guide.

Got myself an Occy VRS this week 2010 FL TDi model. Don't know if the Columbus is retro-fit or was specked originally. Also has a Parrot if this gives any clue???

Right, Very basic q1. When I use my iPhone through the 3.5mm jack in the armrest is there any way that the song details can appear on the Columbus screen like they do when using the HDD. At the moment when I use the 3.5 jack all that is displayed is "AUX".

2. If I want to update the Columbus how to I find out the current software and where is the best place to download the update from. (I think there has been some sort of update done already as I recognises 7-digit postcodes)

3. Is there an "idiots guide" on here already that will give me step-by-step instructions to use when I update???

Cheers, and apologies for all the questions...

You need a MDI input for track display and control of a usb device such as your apple thingy. If you have it fitted (it was an option for the Columbus) you should find it in the glove box. Most people cant be arsed with doing that given the hard drive space and the use of 32Gb SD cards slotting into the front of the Columbus.

Press and hold the setup key (for about 20 sec) and you may see the option to view firmware and map version details, but this function might not be enabled. You could see what the unit originally shipped with by looking at the label on the side of the unit - it's easy to get at.

1. No

3. Yes

2. Remove the fascia and head unit or the dash top box and read the white label (part number, HW & SW numbers).

Cheers fellas, I have a 3-way connector in the ashtray (old apple connector/3.5mm jack/Ethernet????) BUT I think this is for the Parrot. I can't find another MDI anywhere so I don't think the Columbus has it connected.

I'll have a go at pushing the set-up button and if that doesn't work I'll take the fascia off.

What kind of things will the update enable the system to do???

If you already have 7-digit postcodes then not a lot!

Getting the info from the HU via the setup button / hidden menu might not be the factory part numbers. If it has already been upgraded then it wi show a software equivalent of a hardware part number.

Mine is actually 3T0...A part number, but HU says its 3T0...B because it has been firmware upgraded already. Which could lead to me using a firmware that is not suitable for my HU.

Can you post a picture of the 3 way connector you refer to? Sounds a bit odd...

Yeah will post a pic when I get in from work... It's not an Ethernet connection but it is a type of connected that I haven't seen before - it may be for a laptop or something like that.

Sounds like it might be the MDI connector...

paulfitz - rather than use the Aux connector via the armrest why not enable Bluetooth on the phone and stream that way? You'll then get all the info on screen just the same as you do for HDD and SDHC chip. I only use Aux for a dumb old MP3 player.

Camberley Chris - doesn't the Columbus have to have Bluetooth itself to stream direct from my iPhone???

Isn't the Parrot Bluetooth?

No idea if that will allow you to stream music or whether the track details will show up on the Columbus, but the OE BT controller would.

At the moment I am playing music from my iphone through the Parrot - the song info does show up on there, but was just wondering if I could get the info showing up on the Columbus... Think I'm gonna invest in a couple of SD cards and a reader and fill them and the HDD with my iTunes library.

That's probably the easiest / cheapest way around the situation.

Just make sure the files you put on the SD card are MP3's.

If your iTunes media is not already in MO3 format, I'd recomend Media Human Audio Convertor.
