WORD OF WARNING dipping vRS oil level..

Featured Replies

Hello from Austria!

A guy of the Skoda-community forum in Germany has thought over this problem how to do the oil level measurements accurate and with a sufficient high reproducibility.

The short form is to wait over night and do the measurement. Waiting 15min is much too short because the oil needs a lot of time to settle completely. The worst thing one can do is to fill it up to max until one hasn't done the measurement after waiting over night. This could also be the reason for the "suspected" high oil consumption. And also the misfire and spark plug problems could be a result from a oil level over maximum because of false, too early measurements.

The whole story is much longer. Tomorrow I'll translate it into English.

This is how I check oil in my cars since I remember my self.

anyone else up for driving over to SUK one day as was suggested in the 'what oil' thread? Maybe get them to demonstrate the correct method from their point of view

Another thought for the magic of oil dipping...  :drunk:

I did my usual Saturday 40km trip home from visiting the wrinklies, stopped with 91 degrees showing on the oil temperature, left for 15 minutes (sorry George, it's too hot otherwise, and I've had the level looking low after 10 minutes). It was down to about 1/3 up the "B", X-hatched section, so I added 250ml, which brought it up to 4/5 way up the X-hatching. This took about 5 minutes, more or less. I park outside my garage to gain better access to the oil paraphenalia, and normally leave the car outside for a while. This time I decided to start it up straight away. The oil temperature was still showing on the MFD - the temperature was down to 72 degrees.

So, possibly another way to confuse the issue... :giggle: would we be better off using a set oil temperature before dipping, rather than guessing how long to wait after who knows what operating temperature has been reached?

Or maybe just dip cold before trips in the very hot ambient temps.

& maybe have another Fosters, before you set off.

-2*oC here this morning, & lovely dry roads

(home now and it is 4*oC)

really nice for good MPG and cool running Oil Temp!!!

140 miles this morning and the oil never reached above an indicated 88*oC

You can keep that -2C. It was 34C here today, and I hit 100 degrees oil temp. just casually driving uphill - no "spirited" driving at all.

Hi...did you manage to translate.

I wish we could have a good set of steps that we all agree on and make that a sticky....

I've just seen the oil light having driven ~3000 miles from purchase a few months ago (11 plate). So this will be my first oil fill up.
