Audio upgrade

Featured Replies

I'd post this in the ICE section, but after having a good look through pages of threads, there doesn't appear to be much in the way of Mk1 Fabia talk on there...

I'm finally getting to the point where I've had enough of the standard speaker setup in the car. I run a half decent Alpine headunit, but I'm fed up on how tinny the system sounds.

What have people upgraded to please? I'm looking for more bass definitely, but I want quality also... all without breaking the bank please! Has anyone found an underseat sub that fits ok? I have a few door rattles too, so I'm guessing a little bit of Dynamat would be on the cards - not too much though as don't want to increase weight if I can help it...

Cheers all! :-)

Sound deadening the car will make a massive difference. Never known a car with so much road noise to be honest. That and then amp up and upgrade the door speakers. 6.5" speakers give good all round sound and good mid bass. Any more bass youll need a sub imo

Yeah I'm definitely after a sub - if I can squeeze an underseat sub in then I'll do that, as I want to keep my boot free if I can. I'm only going to soundproof the doors a little bit so that they don't rattle, as I'm just reducing the car's performance otherwise!

Anyone got any info on their setups please??? I'm pretty useless with what audio brands are good value and will give me what I'm looking for...

No idea on equipment required but why not build a false boot floor by lifting the current carpet/wood up enough to fit a sub under there in a wooden structure, therefore leaving the boot relatively untouched apart from a couple of inches in height lost.

Hope i've explained it properly and i think someone did something like that before but name escapes me.

Yeah I did have a think about this before, but I don't think I'd want the hassle should I need to get underneath, i.e. having to put spare on. I'd like everything to be neat and under the front seats if it'll fit! I did the whole 'massive sub' thing years ago!

Plus I'm probably going to buy another Labrador in the near future, so need a free boot ha ha!

I think one in the spare wheel well is an awesome thing to get built in, but it's risky running without a spare IMO.

If you design it around the spare wheel, then you could still access it without issues. ;)

I would go for a set of Alpine SPG-17CS component speakers for the front doors.

Definitely apply some dynamat or similar around where the speaker sits to prevent vibrations and improve mid-bass reponse. I’d also invest in a moisture guard to protect the back of the speaker from water ingress (it can get very wet in there). You can run them off the standard head unit but they aren’t very well powered so an amp will give you that extra sound quality and allow the speakers to go louder without distortion. But it’s not something that you have to do initially if funds are tight. Can always add one later.

Regarding a sub woofer, the cheaper under seat subs aren’t that brilliant or powerful. The Focal ones are said to be good but expect to pay £200+ for one. Another option would be to get a compact 10 inch active sub (sub and amp in same box, tidier install) and get a quick release connection kit so you can whip it out if you want full use of the boot space.

The FLi active subs are very good for the price and they don’t take up too much space.

2x100 or 2x150 amp. with decent component speakers up front. Use Plastic or MDF spacer rings and buy speakers 60mm or shallower in depth. Buy speakers with a high sensitivity to make the most of your amp power.

Doesn't need much in the way of dynamat. The doors are already pretty solid. Every little helps though. :)

For a real job, get the noisekiller kit fitted. That'd be the best part of £300 fitted!

As for a sub, the best way I can think of running one is to empty the spare wheel and plonk an 8 or a 10 in there. Raise the boot floor a smidge to hide cables and tools and the the jack etc. Possibly the amp too but that could go under the passenger seat together with the 2 channel front amp.

Strangely, I couldn't find anyone on eBay selling fiberglass spare wheel mouldings.
