Should I get a Superb estate

Featured Replies

Just thought I'd hijack the thread for a moment and offer my humble opinion on the Superb.

I have had two and enjoyed the experience of using them for 6 years simply put the best cars I have had I miss the mile munching ability, from Bielefeld to my parents in the UK nearly 600 miles no problems reliability faultless other than servicing costs never had to pay out on anything. Supremely comfortable, library quite, huge amount of space( 18 year old son is over 6 foot and looked lost in the back). My Hound (monster sized Great Dane) loved travelling in the Superb's as he had so much room. Brilliant brilliant cars.

Go for it you won't be disappointed

I've done 47000 miles in mine in 18 months and it's been brilliant.

We bought ours specifically for the rear leg room.

Checked mine yesterday at 55kph it stays in 4th gear. Mine has done about 12k miles so not sure whether it would be an adaptive issue or whether it is settings/software I'm sure someone can give a suggestion. According to me 55kph is about 35mph, my car does 80 mph in 6th at about 2.5k revs, so would be pulling just over 1k revs at 35 in 6th. I can "persuade" mine to do this on a flat road using manual over ride but it soon changes down again.

It is exactly as you say - it does 1100 rpm at 55 km/h at 6th. And if the road is flat - it stays at 6th, unless I push the pedal little bit more. Then it goes to 5th or 4th, but then the speed is increasing to 70 km/h. So then the best is to drive at 50 km/h, then it is 5th around 1500 rpm.

I will check what is the level of rpm at 80mph or 128 km/h.

I hope this issue is adaptive, because I do not think that it is healthy for the engine to work at so low rpm. Also the vibrations is noticeable.

From other hand - I've done only 500 km so far, so might be too early to comment anything :)

We bought a twindoor just over 3 years ago.  After looking at the A6, 5 series and E class.

We just couldn't see where the Superb fell down against these others (only in the eyes of our friends (who drive 5 series or E classes!))

Oh please. The Superb is a very good car, but it's in a direct comparison and ignoring price it is not as good as A6, 5 series or eclass.

A6 has slightly better handling and a much better interior than Superb. Quality of materials, ergonomics and media system are all better in A6. Less legroom and boot space, but rear seat squab is both wider and longer so better than Superb IMHO. Given price difference though I'd choose the Superb any day.

5 series, has significantly better handling and ride comfort. I've also found both petrol and Diesel engines to be better than VAG equivalents. Interior is much better quality along with idrive much better than Columbus touchscreen. Ergonomics and dash layout is a bit questionable on latest 5 series. Lacks space in all areas and slope of tailgate restricts loadspace for bulky items or if you have dogs.

Eclass not much different in handling, slightly taughter, airmatic option on eclass is much better though. Standard kit now on par/better than superb. Interior much better both in quality and layout. Media system about the same, overall I'd say it is slightly better than Columbus. Not as much rear legroom but width of rear seats much better and loadspace just as good.

Autos in BMW and merc were better than DSG in my opinion.

I'm changing out mine this year, so I have just specified up a new 170 4x4 DSG Superb estate and an eclass 220 AMG auto sport estate. List price for a similar spec is ~£32K for superb, and ~£40K for eclass. In % terms, discount was close, slightly more on merc and with better residuals it was only £6 more a month on 48 month PCP. So after toying with going for a spec'd up VRS estate just to have a different dash to look at, I've cancelled due to 6-8 month wait and I'm going to order the eclass estate. I did also look at a 520d estate, but there were no where near the same levels of discount on the BMW and because of this and given space limitations it was ruled out for me. However, having driven a bunch of rental 5series this year, for overall package I'd say the BMW is the best out of all four.

Cheers

Steve, did you also look at the CLS estate?  Just looking out the window at one now.  Looks a bit like a paper plane.

CLS estate's stunning. Guy at my work's got one

A lot of sense with that post stevehg - I've said for a long time that whilst the Superb is a good car, its not a great car. A colleague has a 520d saloon and to be honest its a better place to be than my Superb. Ok the Superb has excellent legroom in the rear, but it's narrow cabin make it cramped for 3 in the back.

E-Class estates look great, one passes me most days. Good move, hope you enjoy it

No, CLS is about £12K more for the 250 auto. There was more discount available, but it would still be quite a bit more a month and I'm not sure the two labs would enjoy the space in the back. ;)

I'm justifying the Merc with the boss at home, based on the fact it's not much more than superb, even after sneaking in the full LED lights. ;) ;) I've had full xenons for the last 14 years so I'm not sure I'd want to go back to halogen full beam.

Thanks Coops, yes I think the face lift looks a lot better.

Good for you that you can include RWD cars into short list. This is not possible in our country :-)

Still, from all cars I've tested I liked Jaguar XF the best. But the price was not ideal :-)

That's the one thing I'll miss from Superb is 4x4. Rarely needed here weather wise, but personally I quite like the combination of bags of torque and awd. I drove a 328i xdrive rental in US recently, and that was a good combination of engine and drivetrai toon. If it wasn't for the 3 teenagers and 2 dogs I may have considered a 330d xdrive as well.

Didn't look at XF estate, although I saw on Octavia forum that in UK you can get £5K+ discounts as another member cancelled their VRS order to order one of these for March delivery.

Cheers

Steve

The answer to the OP is definitely, YES

Buy an Octavia.........it's a superb estate  :)

Well, thanks to you lot, I've gone ahead and ordered one.ended up with a really good deal on a brand new one which was only marginally more expensive than a used. Should be picking it up in the bpnext few days.

Daft question - do they come with carpet mats or o I need to buy some ?

Thanks for all of your help Nd reassurance. Much appreciated.

Should come with fitted mats front and rear.  They actually clip into place (via plastic studs on the floor) on the front so won't move around.  What model did you go for?

It's the Elegance 140 diesel. Silver (we live down country lanes so black probably wouldn't have been the est choice other than a few weeks in the summer).

Really pleased actually, it feels like the right choice.

Same as mine (not FL though) good call on the black - never going to buy black again, nightmare to keep clean.

Nice one and best of luck with it!  You gave it good consideration too so I don't think you'll be disappointed.  Colour makes perfect sense.  You're lucky that you don't have to wait for over two months like most of us!
