who "owns" the fault logged data off the computer

Featured Replies

As in if I instruct and  pay a dealer to put our car on "the Computer" to find outstanding fault codes.

Can I insist on "full disclosure" i.e the  computer print out.

Or do I simply have to accept what they choose to  tell me?

Regards,

Marcus

legally (I think) if you specify when booking it in that you want a copy of the data they are required to provide this.

If you book it for a diagnostic check, they don't have to give you the codes - they can just tell you what's wrong. Most will give you the codes if you ask.

If they agree to give you the codes when you check the car in, only then they do they have to because that's what you are paying them to do. Get them to write on the service sheet that you want the fault codes and 2-digit reason codes. If you want them to scan more than just the engine, you should make this clear too. If you want a photocopy of the printout, then ask.

The 2-digit reason code is often as important as the fault code. e.g http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/00776 . Knowing whether the fault is an 'Implausible Signal' or 'Open or Short to Ground' is vital when it comes to fault finding.

Thank you both above.

Our car was in for a scheduled service yesterday.

there are long running warranty software issues as yet unresolved, and indeed perhaps unresolvable.

Skoda are currently in denial.

I twice asked them (verbally) to put the car on "the computer"

they merely serviced it and returned it.

I will now follow this issue up

Thanks Marcus

Putting the car 'on the computer' is part of the service.

After a very civil Ph call(on my part and indeed fortunately)

Got to the bottom of my query.

Apparently if they can clear the record of the fault, it didnt happen/dosnt matter.

(It was however noted on the very thoroughly filled in service paperwork)

Apparently.

Ghost fault codes can occur, this is why its common practice to clear them and see what returns. My Audi for instance generated all kinds of fault codes when the battery was having issues that were nothing to do with the battery. Having now replaced the battery the codes have never reappeared, but nothing else was changed.

Generally speaking a fault usually appears again more or less instantly once cleared if the fault is still present.
