Rough guide to making a DIY vent gauge holder

Featured Replies

Copied this from my project journal in case anyone wanted it make one as this was the easiest way I found to do it with sticking the vents shut etc.

Had my boost gauge in its holder here

Was quite happy with it there although the holder did look abit tacky. I used double sided tape to hold it there as it was awkward to get a screwdriver in there to screw it up. Anyway went to the scrappy to get a window motor but they didn't have one but ended up getting a passenger vent as mine was broken and a drivers one to have a go at putting my boost gauge in.

Put the passenger one in with my carbon wrap surround on, nice to have a working one in and not have part open and part shut.

Anyway on to the gauge holder. Didn't get a pic before I started cutting but basically take the vertical slats out and put as much no more nails around it to stick the vents shut. These need to be solidily shut or they will fall out and you won't be able to cut it and if you cut them individually you won't get them sat back in as they won't be solid pieces and it just won't work at all!! I've started to cut the hole here but you can see how I've stuck them shut. It needs 24hrs to set.

Anyway mark out where you want the gauge and then cut around it but slightly in so the hole is too small (not trying to sound patronising here!!) I used a cutting tool off a air compressor like a mini grinder but a dremmel might work.

Then it's just a case of using a die grinder to keep shaving bits off until the gauge goes in. The flaps are stuck solid and apart from the 2nd flap down on the left they didn't move when cutting and grinding :)

During the process of putting my carbon wrapped vent surround on and messing with the gauge the flap that came unstuck fell out and I couldn't find it so I used some gloss black wrap to cover the flaps like so.

Fitted it all in, just extended the silicone hose and extended the power and earth wires as mine is one of those gauges that goes completely black when off.

With the gauge off. The camera has picked it up but when you look at it you can't actually see anything.

I wasn't overly keen on the wrap and after hours searching for the missing flap I ended up going through the bin looking for the passenger vent to rob a slat off. Finally got it and cut it down then took it all out and removed the wrap and stuck the slat in then reassembled.

Gauge off but the flash has shown up the face abit.

As this is a fairly bright gauge I will see how I get on with it here. If it's too bright I will fit a switch to turn the light off hidden out of sight.

When it's out it doesn't look pretty but once fitted it looks good. If the proper ones weren't over £100 I'd of bought one but I'm happy with this. The only thing I've messed up on slightly is on the bottom slat on the left I went slightly too far out. If I wasn't to point it out you'd probably never know but because I know it's there it's bugging me abit. I might do another if I get bored but for a first attempt I'd sooner have this than be £100 poorer

I want to do this, just need to pluck up the courage to start lol

That's why I got a spare vent lol. I had a go on my old passenger one by taking the slats out and cutting them then trying to put them back together and it doesn't work. If you do it you need to glue them shut when there all in like in the pic. Also leave the vent surround on until theyre stuck in as this keeps the slats in.

Once it's all stuck it's pretty easy and it's just common sense really, you'd be aable to do it no probs!

I was lazy and bought one from swg motor sport. Was £80 and fits perfect and 52mm gauges fit in pucka. Worth checking out if lazy like me! Lol

I was going to do this but a mate has given me one. Looks good though, much better without the wrap imo!

Looking good!
