95 vs. 97

Featured Replies

After a couple of tanks of 95, while using up the current free petrol offer I decided to try 97 ron [2.0FSI]. Anyone got any comments on performance of 95 against 97? Trouble is, I'm till running in so can't really get the feel of it.

So far I don't think I'd pay the difference when the vouchers run out though.

if i fill up with 95ron and turn my boost controller to max and boot it the car spaz's out and cutrs all power back, stick 97ron in it and it flies. must be something in it

Which is the best to mix with diesel? :)

Can you say that again in English!!? What boost controller?

i think in bengie's case the engine is probably detecting pinking and holding back on the 95ron. 97 gives it the extra octane to allow the car to run as it should.

sorry, my car is played with by jabba. forgot to mention that :o

In a standard car I reckon there is no difference. But then again I use Tesco petrol because its the same as Shell/Esso etc.... but what do I know?

depends what your car is meant to run on, i do notice a difference when i use super unleaded on mine, but some wont depending on your car

The Good Book says 2.0 FSI runs okay on 95 but expect improved performance on 97. I usually use Sainsburys, 'cause I like the tomato sauce, but with the freebie vouchers you have to use Shell [also known as Arm & Leg].

I think I'll get a better idea after a few thousand miles, but by then the bl***y vouchers will have run out!

I find that 97 is a 'slight' improvement over 95, but for the biggest difference, try the 99 from some branches of Tesco. Now that really makes a difference! My standard remap and boost controller from Jabba took me from 189 to 240bhp using the 99 fuel. After all, every little helps....

To see the benefits in performance and fuel consumption of the FSI engine you need to be using 97ron, it should pay for itself in the fuel consumption achieved once the ECU has adapted.

Basically if the engine is tuned for a certain RON level, stick that in. You'll be paying more per liter but it will do a LOT more MPG to make up for it.

If you have the 98+ RON stuff, you'll probably only benefit with a remapped car though IMHO.

I was at Tesco in Stevenage yesterday and noticed their super unleaded was 99RON which I thought was a little odd (but very potent I expect!!!).

On the upside I "only" paid 91.9p per litre of diesel conpared to 95.9p if I'd filled up in Royston some 15 miles down the road!

Well, the car is bog standard but the book definitely states the higher octane is what it's made for. [but also states there is no problem/damage using 95]. I think you only notice any difference when you floor the throttle, which for me happens about once every four years, so I guess it will be 95 when I'm paying for it.

But you'll get better economy on 97ron and so it'll actually be cheaper than 95ron, that's the whole point of the FSI engines.

Exactley what I told our accounts department when i was confronted by a banshee complsining that my fuelbill was 4p a litre dearer than others.

I told her that i got 10-15% better mpg than "normal " petrol

Still got the 4p alitre Mantra

Sat her down and explaoined that over the course of week bear in mind I average 800 to 1000 miles I reckoned on my basic maths it was actually cheaper to use and saved the company about

I agree - I just got in from a quick blast on the M23/M25 [brighton to Heathrow] and back, and was amazed to see the trip comp' registering nearly 40 mpg [97 ron']. I guess I was doing about 85 mph most of the time [only theoretically, Officer!]

So have you changed your mind or will you still be going back to 95ron?

So then tell me...

If I fill up my petrol 2.0 with 98 Octane fuel (currently using 95 octane), will it make a difference in the running of the car?

Not really as I assume yours is the old 8 valve engine which is designed to run on 95ron.

Good question - depends a bit on what prices are by then - probably got enough free vouchers for maybe 3 months more. Also, haven't ever done a measurable run using 95 to compare with. However, as I do low mileage, I'll probably stick with 97 now. I'd hate to be trundling along thinking I could have had a bit more zip for another few quid in my tank. Also, I just found my annual insurance has gone down about
