hi , im new here and new to the tdi motors , iv just bought a 1.9 tdi , 90bhp i think 2002 Octavia , its done 150k and has loads of history but id like to know its up to scratch and know my way round it without spending to much , i love the car and its seems good so far , i heard somewhere there was something that should be cleaned out around this mileage ? maybe a manifold ? any way any tips on what to check or clean that i can do my self would be great .

many thanks .d

ps the forum looks very friendly and us-full so far :)

Welcome to the 90bhp diesel club :)

im thinking you've been told about doing a mr muscle vnt turbo cleaning?

theres a very good guide done if you search for it.

basically the vanes can gunk up and get sticky, which prevents them adjusting properly during boost demand.

the forum is very friendly, and loads of knowledge around.

things to do -

Get your door cards off and check the membranes are intact to prevent water getting into the cabin...

Get the scuttle panels off the bottom of the windscreen, and clean out the drains

and behind the wheel arch liners to prevent other leaks...

theres very good guides on both of those drainage issues.

Things to watch - Drivers door wiring loom , window regulators... and thats about it!

Pagid for brake discs and pads get the most votes when that time comes around.

Buy some high output H4 bulbs - Osram Night breaker or Philips Extreme Vision - budget dependant

Check the fuse box on the battery for warm cables/signs of melting too.  Otherwise hope you enjoy the purchase :-)

I would do this.Done it to my mechanic friend's Transporter T5 wich is in mint condition, and oooh that made a huge difference

what does that diesel purge do Julian? is it an engine wash?

I would mr muscle the turbo for good measure and a full service. Clean the egr valve out and maybe blank it or pull the pipe

cleans the injectors,valves,is very effective

Sorry mate but,I don't think is a good idea at all,I don't want to debate this, everyone uses everything he want for it;s car,but I as a certified mechanic won't reccomend this at all.

the mr muscle thing

the mr muscle thing

the mr muscle has been knocking around here as recommended since long before i joined up 2 yrs ago?

And not just on this forum but on most forums VAG related?

I don't give a s~!t how long this crap idea has,but spraing oven cleaner in the turbo and all that gunk combined from cleaner and carbon deposit ends up where? in the CAT.....yeeah!great idea

Well your the only person ive ever seen complain about it. And since it saves many people alot of money and does actually WORK im sure people will carry on doing it.

If that carbon junk didn't get caught up in the turbo it would be in the cat anyway (granted maybe not in such a "lump"). If the cat fails, just upgrade it to one of these...

It's good that you are questioning what others are doing to their cars and recommending others do but you just have to accept that it's perceived wisdom that this is, in fact, not going to damage the turbo/cat/exhaust. You should stop derailing multiple threads with this though.

Well said that man ^

All I'am doing is to share my experience and knowledge as a proffesional on this forum.I'll slow down

This mr muscle thing is beyond stupidity....is just my oppinion as engineer, mechanic, who studied some years, who passed many exams, some of them with maximum grades, who was head of the classs....but what the f<@%& someone found a way to skip servicing a turbo with oven cleaner and a bunch of idiots followed him.

But it works? It saves time and money and does the job. And before you start i passed many of exams in the same fields as yourself.

you are 2 years younger than me

What does that have to do with the price of a tin of mr muscle exactly?
