Hills - The lake district

Featured Replies

I'll be off to the Lake District in a couple of weeks, hoping to get some decent driving done while I'm there.

Whats the area like for speed cameras etc? Do thyey do daft things like placing cameras on hills? I like driving up hills :D

depends where you go... there *WERE* very few cameras in Cumbria, but there's more springing up.... mostly mobile ones tho so you never know where they're gonna be!

If you go along the A66, watch out for the 'police only' parking bays...

And enjoy the hills :D I'm off up there in a coupla weeks to go see my mum and to work out a driving route for a puma meet ;)

Make sure to go on my favourite road - Keswick to Ambleside (A591) and then you can up the Kirkstone Pass. Ace.

I live about an hour's drive ;) from the lakes, it depends where you are planning to go. if you get into the southe lakes be VERY careful on the A591 that runs towards Ulverston, they do trap fromn time to time and use virtually unmarked vans sometimes, if you get out through the mid / North lakes i.e Windermere / Ambleside, no fixed cameras to speak of but can get quite busy!

The road from Ambleside to Keswick is a wide fast entertaining run of about 20 miles and you are in luck, the steepest road in england is the Hardknott / wrynose pass, 1 in 3 in parts...... will come to mind on more than one occasion, remember doing it in a Pug 406 that continued to slide backwards with all 4 wheels locked!it was only some careful clutchwork that got it going forward again......all in all enjoy! if you are staying in or around ambleside I can recommend the Mortal Man pub / restaurant at troutbeck or for some wicked tapas in ambleside town centre Lucy's Four!

Try those B road around Windermere (lake), don't worry about speed limit, as you won't able to drive much faster than the limit. Your hand will be very busy on steering wheel. Have fun.

mmm Hardknott Pass....did that in me mini once....haven't had as much fun drivin a car since...:rofl:

bit narrow mind  took the wifes yaris around there last autumn, watch out for MASSIVE potholes on the way down...looking round the zigzag bend i missed a HUUUUUGE pothole on the bend...BANG went the chin of the front spoiler.. we've got the whole run on camcorder & you can clearly see it coming...ooops...

MPM :D

Watch out for unmarked cars and bikes we have a nice silver mercedes estate in the area

Are you a Bolton Wanderer....Wanderer

I'll second that. Ive not bothered to look what car you have, but if it's a pd130 you can do the whole pass in 4th gear, try it its good fun.

I was up in the Lakes on Tuesday, and there was a camera van on the A591 between Kendal and Windermere - possibly a place called Ings I think.

Up again next week for a camping holiday (South Lakes), so I'll let you know if I see anything else about!

On a slightly different not but nontheless related to some good 'spirited' driving, any one on here from the Galloway area, going up to stay there for a long (Sat-wed) weekend, any recommendations on what where to see, talivans etc...
