Hi All,

I have a 2010 Octavia MK II 1.8 TSI with 60,000 Km running stock. I would like to mod it to stage 2, perhaps stage 3 in the future. At the moment, I'd be happy with 300-350 HP with perhaps 300 NM Torque. To this end, I'd like some advise on the mods.

Turbo:

I have been reading up on the various turbo mods that can be done, K04 seems to be the least messiest and easiest upgrade to do. I sort of like the idea of the GT28 series turbos (2871RS?); living in India with its dense traffic, I suppose the primary requirement for a Turbo is quick spool time. Which turbo would you suggest? I am ofcourse open to other suggestions

Manifold:

Should I buy this as part of a turbo kit? any other suggestions?

Exhaust:

I'd need a free-flow exhaust to get the most of out of the turbo upgrade. Should this depend on the turbo I purchase?

Brakes:

I'm considering an upgrade to Tarox Brake Pads. Shuold I use Strada or Corsa series? Will this be enough or do I need to change the brakes entirely?

Suspension:

Thinking of going with Bilstein B6 (I am not sure of which series yet).

What other mods will I need to keep my car running in a safe and reliable manner? would I need a LSD? for financial reasons, I may have to take up the upgrades in a step-by-step form. Which ones would you suggest I do first? Please feel free to suggest any other products in lieu of what I am considering. I'm very grateful for your aid in this matter.

Thanks

350 HP? There is a guy in Bulgaria who got his 1.8 to 343PS with K04 and another 15,000$ investments.

I have around 245-250PS/407Nm/300lb/ft with following changes:

1. Revo Stage 2 Map (Sharks stage 1 previously)

2. Complete new exhaust, de-cat, downpipe 3 inch, 2.5 inch afterwards.

3. Audi S3 Intercooler

4. EVOMS Induction kit

Thats it for the engine.

Then uprated rear ARBs and VRS/GTI front brakes 312mm.

I would say try the Stage 1 remap first and freeflow exhaust/better suspension, then maybe stage 2 when you have money. There is no sense to go K04 route on this engine, getting 250PS with easy upgrades is enough, forget stage3.

If the main requirement is that its quick to spool, personally i wouldnt be putting on a larger turbo. Id be contacting Shark Performance and talking to them about their Stage 1 map. So much nicer to drive than standard and lots of additional torque in all the right places. :)

Hybrid K03 will get closer to (but not match) K04 power and will spool more quickly than a K04.

I would suggest that this isn't the ideal choice if access to custom mapping is limited.

I'd also be tempted to go a bit more heavy duty than 312mm brakes with even 250bhp.

I went with 312mm as I can still fit 16" steel winter tyres.

Interesting: I also want to improve my 1.8TSI. Where might I find an EVOMS induction kit and what does it comprise of?

Also at least you would need a stage 1 Remap Shark/Revo for Cold Air Intake to be of any benefit. De-cat etc to really enjoy the power.

There are better tunning experts here then me :)

if you want a quick car then engine upgrades is only one part of the equation.  suspension/ good handing and reducing unsprung weight will all make the car perform better.

personally i'd go with:

- stage 1 map (shark could do that remotely with an STS)

- suspension upgrade, e.g. rear anti roll bar, front anti-lift kit, upgraded dampers and springs (b12 kit would be good for india as it only has a small drop)

- exhaust, just go with a pre-cat removal initially, costs zero and give you improved spool up.

- light wheels.

once you've done that then you will have a car that is noticably quicker and you might consider you don't need big power :)

Thanks for the reply,

My Multi Quote doesn't work very well so here goes:

@CEPi

1) What exhaust system did you use? From the post I gather that you have a free flowing de-cat exhaust 2.5" exhaust? is this correct?

2) How is the EVOMS induction working out for you? Is this the one that you have? How would it compare to K&N Typhoon intake or the neuspeed system?

3) As far as the intercooler goes, I think I'm going to wait until I decide about the turbo upgrade. Any thoughts?

I think I have some sort of game plan in mind. I will get a free flowing exhaust, suspension and intake upgrades first. Remap the car (surprisingly enough, I do have access to tuners here in India, one or two I would even go so far to say would be successful in Europe as well)

I sure would welcome any suggestions on the components.

@Yeti_Man

I know that a larger turbo will increase spool times, I am trying to find a sweet spot between HP gain and spool time! I think, that with the Turbo I am going to have to think a bit.

@J0hn

Thank you! I will add this to the list. For now, my turbo upgrade is second on my list. I shall revisit the brakes after my first level of mods.

@Rob_e

Thank you! I was thinking along those very lines! I should have a good enough budget to put in a new exhaust system straight away. Any suggestions? I'm definitely sold on a step-by-step upgrade.

Thank you all for the extremely helpful replies! please keep them coming :-)

From what youve said, my shopping list would be:

Stage 1 Shark Performance software (utilising the original IHI turbo)

Milltek downpipe and sports cat/decat (depending on local regulations)

Evoms or similar intake.

This will give you something with more torque, lower than what you have now and quicker spolling with the ability to rev cleanly to the red line. :)

Seems like a sensible suggestion. Our local regulations are a farce. My friends run around on R1s and 848 evo's with race spec exhausts, local authorities are completely clueless, so I can probably get away with any sort of exhaust system. I'd not like to annoy my neighbors every time I pull into my house in the middle of the night though!!

Lowering the revs at which I get peak torque would be absolutely fantastic for daily driving!

Pipewerx did a custom exhaust for me as I have the Scout so it needed custom work due to propshaft.

My Downpipe is 3", then further down it gets 2.5" as 3" is quite noisy if you go all the way.

Check here say at JKM for example parts http://www.jkm.org.uk/performance/tfsik03stage101.htm

There is Milotec downppipe/decat from JKM too.

This is my Evoms, for TSI engines 1.8/2.0

I got the Audi S3 Intercooler only for Stage2, you are ok with stock one for Stage1.

Don't waste money on bigger turbo, better go for bigger front breakes 312/345mm and suspension on Stage 1 remap, and stage 2 when you have money.

Torque is superb on 1.8 anyway from 1500-4200rpm, tunning will make it more flexible say driving in 4/5 gear at 50kmh, or on 4'th gear I can drive from 50kmh to 200kmh, so doesn't need much gear changes diesel style and no need to go over 5000 rpm anyway for spirited driving.

Good luck ;)

Keep the CAT and all exhaust parts when you swap, just in case the environment authorities starts setting exhaust emissions at some date :)

I'm planning the stage 1 already, from a local tuner, but I wanted to improve the breathing as well with a CAI and new downpipe (it seems that the Milltek is a decent bolt on, that I could source here), but its still early days (I haven't actually taken delivery yet...!)
