Question about removing dashboard trim, USB power outlet

Featured Replies

Hi!

Can anybody help me with how I should remove the trim part that is located to the right of the Climatronic control module (LHD car)? I would like to add a USB power outlet, and this seems to be the perfect place. Therefore I would like to remove the plastic piece so I can work in more comfort inside, and also have better access to whatever is behind.

Just levers off out of the dash. I find it easier to use a plastic trim tool to pop the top edge out first, then the lower one.

Thanks for your reply. That was what I thought as well, but I wanted some confirmation before applying too much brute force :)

The last time I pulled a section like that out I used a credit card. It's a bit more gentle than a screwdriver head.

This project seems to be very sensible. Roomster's cabin is really missing power outlets, there's just one 12 V socket (and one in boot) and no USB connectors for power.

I agree. This spot seems to be the perfect place to add a (few?) USB socket(s). Once I get myself to do this mod I can post pics and comments as well

Trim removed and checked. Unfortunately the blank panel it self is quite narrow, only about 30 mm (just over an inch) across, and beneath there are some steel frame bits and pieces for the dashboard. So any ready made plug in 12->usb socket will not work :( It is possible to squeeze in just the business end of an usb female plug and hotglue it, though. It could also be possible to mount just an usb socket (if a suitable one is found) and mount the 12->5v converter somewhere else behind the dashboard.

This project is on hold for now until I can find the correct parts, but I might come back to this later on (or then just get a USB extension cord and use the exising power outlet between the seats)
