Rust on rear drum (Monte Carlo's)

Featured Replies

While washing our 3 week old Monte Carlo I came across a rust ring around the drivers side rear drum where the wheel meets the drum....anyone else have this little niggle.....we will be on the phone bright n early to Skoda tomorrow and I'll be taking some photos as well....(it's only the one drum as well)

It's well documented on this forum.  The drums (and front calipers) are only painted with a grey type of undercoat which rusts after a while.

Most people have resorted to either leaving them as they are or giving them a lick of black paint.

Good luck getting it sorted under warranty.

My rear drums are getting a couple of coats of black rust proof spray as soon as I have time.

The front calipers are different and have a silver anodised finish as they're alloy so don't rust.

All Polos, Ibizas and Fabias with rear drums are the same so don 't feel like you're the only one it's happened to.

Mine done this as well. No need to call Skoda, give your drums a lick of black high temperature paint and they won't do it again.

Black hammerite brush applied quick and easy and will last for ages.

I hear wot u are saying but should I spend my hard earned on some paint..??? when to be honest here, it shouldn't bloody happen...!!!!! :@

Yep it happens to all of the lower budget cars with drums on the back , get wheels of paint the drums with anti rust paint and copper grease the alloy where it touches the drum or your wheels will become welded to the rear drum :)

I'll be very surprised if Skoda do anything with your drums, if they do decide it's covered under warranty all they'd probably do is get them painted anyway. Good luck.

If it comes to being repainted then they can paint the feckers black......

I do not think they will paint them you will have to do them yourself. if you did everybody on here with rusty drums will want theres doing. (so i think skoda will say NO)

It ain't gonna happen, but feel free to have a wasted journey

Happens to any make not just Skoda. Grit on the roads in the winter will make it happen sooner. Good luck claiming under warranty. You going to claim for every bolt etc that starts to rust in that case??

I would get yourself back to Halfords for some black paint/spray as I doubt you'll get any joy.

I washed and waxed mine today and noticed a tiny bit rust on the drums where they fit against the hub plate but I've had mine 10 months now so I'm not too concerned, I've got the spray ready but I just need to borrow my mate's trolley jack when he's back off his rig.

I know you're p****d off but your car could have been standing in a compound being exposed to rain and everything for a few months before you got it.

Dealership will probably not do anything as they won't get paid out by Skoda.

If they're feeling particularly nice and you kick up enough fuss they may paint it out of a gesture of goodwill off their own backs.

Skoda's official line is if it's not affecting braking performance, jog on.

According to our dealer the car was built to our order so I doubt it would have been in a field somewhere.................on the other hand if I paint them does this invalidate the warranty....?????

It may be worth the OP spending a little time looking up 'iron' and 'properties of iron' and 'oxidation'.

Warranty on what, the paint on the brake drums won't be covered anyway so there's nothing you can do to affect it.

Annoying though it is, this is not a warranty item. The drums are iron and steel mix and are coated with zinc based paint at the factory. This always rusts. Mine did after a few weeks. It's the same for all cars with drum brakes of any make. Never had a car in my entire life so far that didn't do this. My current car is discs all round and the hubs still rust as do the discs if left overnight after a good rain. Smoothrite silver or black paint alliviates the problem. Easy!

Definitely not Warranty - I asked the same question.  It's considered to be "cosmetic only" and doesn't affect performance.

The upside is that now at 21 months old, the drums look no worse than 6 months old.  So I haven't done anything about it yet - bigger fish to fry.  Or paint.

Thanx for all ur help whether it be helpful or sarcastic lol but I think I have this covered paint wise as I do a bit of spraying from time to time :) and yes I also understand They all car drums do rust at some point, it just ****es me off that it's happened after 3 weeks that all, I know that my fiesta drums hadn't rusted after a yr, I suppose I thought because of the vw connection they'd be the same quality, Big mistake by the sounds of things

When we are down in wales next month the dealer we bought the car from said for us to bring the car in for them to check the rusting on the drivers drum (as I sent some photos off to them) to the point where he checked to brand new unregistered monte's for the same symptoms which they had.....lol brand new built to order montes with rust on the rear drums....ffs shabbly that......I wouldn't be to pleased... :@

I have seen new in the Showroom that have started to corrode,

Unbelievable that anyone working in a Dealership for more than 1 day would not notice the Used Vehicles they have sitting. or pretend not to know.

The Car Valleter knows,

they are causing the Corrosion on lots of the vehicles while washing every day with their products.

The Sales People are giving an Italian Tune Up often with the Sales Stock,

to get the rust off the Discs before a Customer gets in for a Test Drive.
