Dashboard Rattle

Featured Replies

I have got a rattle from the dashboard on my Octy. Now i would say it is coming from either the very bottom right of the instrument cluster but maybe perhaps behind it. I have been trying to figure out exactly where but it is proving difficult. Yesterday i had the das in bits to see if i could spot anything noticable that was making the noise. I removed the headlight switch and the panel to the right/lower steering wheel area. Now i had a good rummage around but could not really find anything loose. The noise is a sort of mettalic rattling, similar to a key rattlingon your keyring whilst it is in your ignition but it is not this as i have removed all keys from my keyring and the noise is still present. Has anyone had anything similar to this? Does anyone have any suggestions?? and also if i take it to the dealer what are the chances of them rectifying it?? It is properly doing my head in now.

Thanks

Rob

I've had that same problem for 2 years on my Octy - from new in fact. I always thought it came from the dash but just recently I happened to hold the release button on the handbrake as I was driving along and I'm sure the rattling stops when you hold that button. See if it works for you. I'm going to wait till I hear it again and try holding the button to see if the rattle stops. Doesn't rattle all the time but when it does it carries on for ages and annoys the hell out of me.

I have this problem too :( , last night driving back this bloody noise appeared to get worse and worse!!. Havn't confronted my dealer yet, but gonna try the handbrake fix first. I've also got squeaking brakes when in reverse which I understand afflicts new Octy's, these two noises combined are enough to make you scream :thumbdwn:

Check out the drivers' door, give the trim a slap with the palm of your hand, or a gentle tap with your fist and see if the rattle occurs. If it does the it is very likely to be a loose window regulator.

I find giving the dashboard a really good thump, just above the Octavia logo in the middle, or pressing the air vents hard stops my dash rattling. For a few minutes anyway :(

If the noise is coming from the middle air vents area it could be the dash mount which can be accessed when removing the centre air vent? This is the case for the fabia - not sure if the octy suffers a similar mount squeak sometimes. :)

The rattle on my Octy definitely comes from the handbrake release button. I tested it out today. For 2 years I've been slapping the dashboard and fiddling about with stray sunglasses etc! Always thought it came from the centre of the dash.

I get a rattle from my gear leaver ****.....

I had the handbrake button rattle also, but fixed it myself.

I sometimes get a squeaking noise from the instrument cluster screen surround... usually sorted by pushing the rhs corner of the surround.

i've got a rattling squeek type of noise coming from around the glove box somewhere... anyone had / got this?

I have been having another go at tracing the rattle. It is not the handbrake button so i have ruled that one out.

My latest investigations have led me to believe it is either coming from behind the instrument cluster or possibly something to do with the drivers side air vent as the up/down adjuster on this seems so be more loose than all the others on the car.

Is it easy to remove the air vent to rule this in or out of causing the problem??

I am not sure i want to be removing the instrument cluster myself as i am not sure exactly what is involved but if it is not too difficult i may have a go, so has anyone done it?? and what do i need to do to get it out and have a look behind it?

Thanks Again

I belive i have finally traced the source of the rattle that has been doing my head in for ages now.

It has been hard to locate exacly where the rattle was coming from sometimes it sounds like a bunch of keys jangling inside the dash.

However on the way home from work today for some reason i seemed to be able to pinpoint it as coming from the a pillar trim (which i had already had off once before searching for it) I qiuckly pulled in to a small laybye and pulled off the a pillar. I checked that none of the clips where loose and the weren't.

Then i happened to give the plastic ticket holder a wiggle. I could not ferkin believe it. It sounded very similar to the noise i had been putting up with for weeks.

I continued my drive home minuse the a pillar trim, waiting for this noise to happen, sure enough on a particularly rought bit of road the sound was back. I quickly leant forward and pressed my thumb against the ticket holder and paraise be, the noise stopped.

I got home and promptly removed the ticket holder and replaced the trim.

Now hopefully after weeks of this irritating noise, pulling my dashboard half to bits and lots of rumaging around behind it resulting in numerous grazes to forearms, the journey to work tomorrow SHOULD be a lot better.

I also had the car in the dealers last friday and they failed to sort it out, they did however leave the drivers side airvent with one clip missing and also the shroud around the instrument cluster minus one clip. It is booked in anyway for this friday to see if they could have another go at sorting the rattle out. However when i take the car i intend to tell them that i have fixed it myself and ask if they could return the bits they have touched to the same state they were in when i took the car to them in the first place. :finger:

I just want to say thanks to everyone who tried to give advice as to what this rattle was in the first place. It was very much appreciated.

I have a very annoying buzzing sound coming from center of dashboard in my new octavia.the sound only happens when car is warm and heating has been on for a while.Had it in to dealer twice since new, they replaced metal heat deflector just under the windscreen - no joy , they checked other sources but found nothing.I was trying to find it myself recently , took out dash consol where hazard light is and drove around a bit , rattle was gone, but i can not find anything on in dash consol that rattles when out of the dash. Has anybody got this problem, it is driving me and im driving the dealer nuts.

bought my vrs brand new in sept 05 from yorkshire dealer ,drove it around for about 3 days to make sure everything was alright before driving it to france.about 3 hours into the trip home i got this rattle coming from the right of the steering wheel just left of the lights dial.it did my head in.anyway got so annoyed i thumped the plastic trim and it fixed it for a short time.still comes back now and again but if you put the palm of your hand on the trim and apply a good bit of pressure it usually fixes it,touch wood.

Listening for rattles can drive you mad

Stiff suspension + low profile tyres + british roads + plastic trim = Rattle !

I noticed my rattles when I was without the stereo for a while.

The first thing I did was empty all the compartments and glovebox etc.

My worst rattle was from the window mounted brake light. Which I took off (Does anyone know if this affects legality or MOT ? ).

My handbrake also rattles - does anyone know the cure for this ?

I had this problem. It was a 30 second fix using a small piece of sticky back velcro (woolly side) which I pushed in beneath the handbrake button. Rattle gone :)

I took a test drive last week in an 02 vrs octy (now the wifes car) and it had a rattle/squeak, straight away the dealer said it was the glove box. They replaced something and it was ok when we picked it up, sorry i don't know what was replaced. Take it out and have a look if it is the glove box, if it is I would imagine it should be an easy fix. Good luck.

Daz80: High-level brake lights: I think that if they do not work, it's ok for an MOT, although they might advise that you get it fixed.

If the high-level brake light works intermittently during the test then that would be a failure.

Hi i have a dash rattle and spent many hours dismantling the dash. One rattle was stopped by removing the instruement cluster and tightening the mounting bolt behind. Behind this is a large tube/ bar running across the car and i have rattle behind this as well which i can stop by pressing on top of the dash in line with the binnacle.
