Superb II - Which one?

Featured Replies

Hello fellow briskodians,

I'm considering moving from my Superb I 2.5V6TDI-Trip Elegance, to a Superb II. The "I" is a beautiful car, but I'm not in love with its thirsty engine, heavy steering, mis-matched grearbox, water-flooding floors and now a very expensive fuel injection pump replacement. It seems that quality is a bit of a hit-and-miss affair on the 2.5V6s.

What Superb II would you recommend to move to? I like the stronger engines (After 13 years on my Passat 2.3V5...) and I drive a mixture of town and long motorway journeys. But I would like consumption to be at real Diesel levels (40-50+s) not the Petrol level that my current 2.5TDI is giving me (23-38). And I don't want overtaking to starve once you have 4 people in the car. Not too fussed about Auto gearbox, I'm happy with either.

What would you recommend for overall reliability, power and kit? Assume a 3+ year old car, from a price budget perspective.

Thanks

George

Slightly biased opinion of course but the 170CR would be the closest and only real alternative to your current.  Its not a V6 obviously but offers good refinement and plenty of power.   Overtaking not a problem even with passengers but stick to the 170 for that.   350nm of torque which I think is the same as the older V6 TDI? All 170s are CR but some of the 140s would be PD (pre 2011 approx.)  The kit on the elegance and L&K is everything you will need  - bi-xenons, all leather, electric and heated seats, sat nav, cruise control, parking sensors and park assist etc etc. All available on certainly on the 3yr + models.  MPG wise, I get early 50s on mixed driving. - well I did on my last and the current is getting there.  Nothing major to go wrong as long as FSH etc.

Hope that helps

Hi moved this year from Elegance 2.5 v6 to L&K 170 DSG. Still evaluating it only driven 1100 miles. I agree with Superb170 evaluation.

However, I do miss the ease and smoothness of the V6 but the 170 really moves effortlessly when I used kick down. Sport mode very good also. Give some thought to buying the hill hold the new models do roll back without it (or simply use the hand brake )

Spare wheel a must in my opinion first week out catastrophic deflation front tyre from pot hole whilst doing 60 mph.

The L&K spec is top of the range and will take some beating. You can download the PDF version of the user manual and Columbus manual. Helpful when deciding what to buy.

With the discount I was given plus part exchange the L & K was a non brainer for me. £1000 difference in cost for a lot more toys. There are some every good deals to be had if you are prepared to look around and don't mind traveling to buy.

Currently i have a 140 VW Passat Estate and a 170 Skoda Superb, to be honest there is not so much difference in fuel consumption, depends on how you drive it and where, but the performance in 170 is second to none when comparing.

170 wins for me, that's why my wife has the 140 VW.

Go for a 170 L&K DSG Combi .

+1 for the 170 L&K DSG Combi fantastic car.

I have a 170 and has surprising performance for a big car

I too am looking for a Superb & I've narrowed it down to a 170cr elegance. But I was more drawn to a manual rather than a DSG. (Only dsg I've driven was a Fabia Vrs mk2 estate & I hated it!!) depends on what's available when I'm buying in June/July whether I end up with a twin door or an estate. Estate would be ideal for us though! 3 kids & a dog!!!!

I'm happy with my 140 but if I could go back I'd have held out for a 170.

Tried a couple of 170's now. They feel as quick as my mapped pd140. Can't wait to see what a mapped 170 does

Another vote for 170CR with DSG Combi.......great cruiser and swallows all I need to carry.

I also moved from a Mk1 2.5 V6 TDi, in my case I moved to a 4x4 170TDi CR.  I miss the refinement of the V6 and (for me) the superior comfort of the older Mk1.  What I don't miss is the stupid design faults of the older car.

If I were the OP I'd certainly make the switch and hold out for a 170 over a 140.  The Mk2's don't seem to have any common faults as far as I can see on this forum.  I had a tradiator replaced under warranty a few months back but it seems it was a one off, not a common failure.

Well, probably it depends from what car you move to Superb :)

In my case it was 2,4L twin turbo 5 cyl diesel with 225 HP and 460 Nm. And I moved to 4 cyl one turbo 2,0L diesel with 170 HP / 350 Nm. In favour of Superb I have to say, that the difference in performance is not that dramatic. Of course I would be unfair to compare those two engines - additional 100 Nm is a big difference, 5 cylinder has much less vibrations and additional turbo shortens turbo lag.

As for Superb - max torque range is rather short 1750 - 2500, so here DSG helps a lot in changing the gears as fast as it is possible.

For highway cruse (100-140 km/h) it is very good because the revs is exactly in max torque range. For country roads (70-100 km/h) - it is so - so, because when overtaking it downshifts to 6 to 4th if you want to do it quick, and then you get increased engine noise.

Another vote for the 170 and then remap it if (like me) you feel it was lacking a bit of oomph.

(they are not bad as std, but mapped they are loads better).

No question - CR170.

Or, if you own an oil refinery and a small to medium sized country, a 3.6...........

An Elegance Combi is all the car you'll ever need. The L&K has a brown interior inspired by a 1977 Austin Allegro FFS. Stick with the Elegance.

I'm loving my CR170 DSG twindoor Elegance. First ever auto and I wouldn't go back. Twindoor/combi depends on your circumstances, I guess.

Thanks very much for all the input guys, really appreciate it! I know asking the SII forum for advice on the SII is a bit like asking for turkeys to vote against Christmas ;-) But it looks like the 170CR is definitely the one to go for. I'll have to read up on the specs to decide between Elegance and L&K.

But first I need to get my SI back on the road an take it from there.

George

L&K Combi gets panoramic roof, park assist, 10 speaker audio system, TV tuner, ventilated seats, BROWN interior and a few other bits n bobs like heated rear seats. It's a great spec but personally, I can't accept the brown interior. If it came in black, I'd probably have one.

Regarding interior colour, if buying new, you can specify ivory leather, looks great on my black machine. The dash remains brown bur in my opinion is subtle and combines well with ivory. Wife surprised, she tells me I an useless at choosing colours. Sadly I do agree with her but I do avoid getting told off for getting it wrong :0)

I had cream leather (with alcantara) on my VW V5, which with the wood panels looked beautiful when new. But 13 years and three kids later... did not weather very well at. I don't mind Brown leather in principle but it depends on the type of brown and the type of leather. I'll go have a snoop at the local dealership to see what I can find.

Thanks
