can you remove my top end limiter? mk2 fab vrs

Featured Replies

went upto UltimateDubs last week and gave the fab a blitz, but it wouldn't go past 140 and I still had a gear to go? im looking at remapping it, have got an infinity exhaust on her and she sounds lovely, forge inductionkit and blow off valve, just guessing I got a limiter how do I remove this?

From the posting I'm guessing this was a simulated top speed run on a rolling road? If so, then maybe you were getting wheelspin or climbing the rollers. I'd check these points with UD before assuming I had a speed limitter.

Were you in 'S 6' at 140 or 'D7' ?

Something maybe not right with your mods if you can not get over that,

maybe not enhancing your performance.

Maybe read your last Post on the Rev Limiter & the replies. I have bumped it.

Have fun with it.

I doubt any of those mods will add any significant power so not surprised it still tops out at 140. Top speed can be reached in 6th so no need for the car to change up into 7th when in S mode so they don't. I'm guessing you are wondering if there is a way to re-programme the DSG so it shifts into S7? Not sure this can be done or if there is any real point for road use!

I have a car with the real ability of S7, (not the 'Cruise Control on' Displayed S7 where it is in D7 really),

and a few other Early vRS have as well.

Changes up and full throttle and load at about 127 mph to S7 and tops out about 145 on 205/40 R17's.

on 100-102 ron petrol, standard map. about 184 bhp.

*not putting up the picture because a member here hates them, and tells me every time.*

Sharkrider can maybe show the GPS photos in Europe at over 140 in D7.

In a loaded up car i believe.

It sounds like the OP means a speed limiter, not a rev limiter?

The top end is limited by its power. Remap to 205 ps and it will go faster. Remap to stage 2 and faster again.

Yeah I suspect there is plenty of gearing left in 7th to take it comfortably past 140 power permitting. The OPs car isn't mapped tho which I suspect explains why he might be stuck at 140

To be fair i think youd need an awful lot more power to go much past 140, a brick has better aerodynamics than the fabia

Did you never get yours past that?

I have never seen the 5th Gear film or read what the actual Records or speeds were,

i assumed he bettered 139 mph, because i have been in a few that have no problem doing it,

& a Stage 1 certainly has no trouble due to Aerodynamics.

(EDIT PS, Lower it, get better Road Holding, might well mean slower flat out,

Ground Effect, more Friction needs more power to do the seem speed, but then you could say there is less wind restance, so swings and roundabouts,

but at 140 it is nicer to hunkered down & not feel crosswinds moving you.

But its also nice to not get moved off by a Dip or road bump at 140)

Naa the remap didnt make much diffrence uptop because the aerodynamics are sooo bad, but thats just my experiance

Or atleast im putting it down to the aerodynamics

So much can influence top speed but on today's roads in the uk it's pretty pointless.

The fastest feeling road car I ever drove was a 400+bhp Impreza Type RA and that had a top speed of 116mph. That was the redline in top gear.

Then there's Speedo accuracy, On the autobahn at an indicated 140mph my Passat is a good 10mph out compared to GPS.

Many manufactures have the 155mph limit on cars that could smash that. And some manufacturers impose top speed limiters for marketing reasons. If you look at BMW's line up for instance there are cars with lower top speed limiters imposed to give a wide enough gap to the next model up. It's never advertised but tuners usually find them. You still get all the performance available up to that limiter though, doesn't change how the car feels.

And the days have gone when manufacturers choose gearing for maximum top speed, my wife's little hatch is geared for 227mph at the redline.

As speeds rise weight matters less and aerodynamics more. You are going to need large power increases for significant real top speed increases on a tall bluff Fabia.

Tall Bluff,  but maybe Narrower than something as Tall that might be Wider.

So someone might work out the Frontal Area of the Tall and Narrow VS just as Tall and Wider.

Anyway, just 1390 cc, you can not expect miracles, just accept what they are.

Not sure which frontal area is less bluff, more streamline, or which is actually taller.

(i know the Skoda is less pleasing to the eye)

Sometimes the Roof Height as given by VAG needs measured in real life.

Like their given Weights, Kerb/Unladen.

I think the Fabia has a cd of 0.33, my Passat 0.27, and the new Merc CLA just 0.22.

Hatchbacks are never great anyway due to straightish rear end.

You can see how the aerodynamics affect the economy on Fabia at higher speeds, even on our 1.9TDi, there was 20mpg differnce between 70mph and 90mph.

So how much does the poor aerodynamics of a 180 ps vRS effected the MPG economy compared to the Polo GTi, or the Seat Ibiza Cupra, or Audi A1 185 ps,

seeing as it is taller but narrower, and lighter, and on narrower tyres.

Is it actually drinking more petrol at the same speed. ?

I find that it is at slightly less RPM compared to the other 3 at the same speeds and more economical.

I have not tried a vRS Estate for economy long enough or at motorway speeds,

but i expect it to be the most economic.

same frontal area as the hatch, but as you mention, the longer roof helps with the rear,

which is why the rear window and paintwork stays cleaner than on the Hatch.

Can't answer that but the best example I can give is when we had the 1.9TDi Fabia and 1.9TDi Octavia. They had similar gearing but Octy had wider tyres, not exactly the same engine 10bhp difference.

At 50mph the Fabia was easily more economical, at 70mph they were pretty even but at 80+ the Octavia was by far the most economical.

Any idea which one had the higher top speed, because it is maybe more relevant to this thread

and the OP.

(but maybe it does not matter as the UK has a 60 mph NSL and 70 on some roads.)

I have done a GPS-indicated 140mph (225kph as I was in km mode) in my Estate on the German Autobahn and it was in S7 (no cruise fitted) although it was at about 135mph+ it shifted.  Speedo was reading a bit higher, as they do.

Got a bit twitchy at Vmax- not comfortable at all.  125-130mph was fine though.

The Forge Intake could well be a "limiter" of sorts - quite restrictive

Is the infinity exhaust just a catback, if so it won't be contributing anything but noise.  If it is a full system it may actually be reducing back pressure and harming performance unless you have a map on there to take advantage.

+1 for the remap = bigger top speed!

I had always thought in my head 155mph was where cars were speed limited to, providing they can do that speed or more.

The top end is limited by its power. Remap to 205 ps and it will go faster. Remap to stage 2 and faster again.

Or 213bhp at stage 1 if you are lucky :hi:

Stage 2 you should be aiming for 220-230nhp I think.

OP. Then please come back and let us know if you find that speed limiter

This article, although Canadian does explain top speed V drag V power quiet well once you get past all the formulas at the top.

As we were talking about aerodynamics earlier in the thread and top speed questions were asked.

The top speed of the 2.0Tdi Passat and Fabia vRS are the same, the figures above are exactly what you'd see on the autobahn from the diesel saloon.

But the Passat weighs a quarter of a ton more and has 10PS less. That's the aerodynamic difference between a long saloon and a short tall hatch, It takes 180ps to push the 1243kg Fabia through the air at 140mph. While it takes 170ps to push the 1530kg Passat through the air at 140mph. Explains why I see the economy differences I do at high speed.

It now turns out a vRS Fabia Estate is 1,313 kg unladen against a vRS still being 1,243,

and the longer Estate must be why Skoda/VAG showed the Estate as Faster.

(not really, they do it because it is more expensive to buy, fact does not come into it.)

For 3 years they let the story of 5 kg lighter be repeated,

they never corrected the Ibiza weight, and then the Face lift continued with the wrong weight,

they did the same with the Polo for a while.

Why does it matter?,  because they had towing weights from VAG, the vRS do not,

so no matter.

Official figures, 0-100 km (62 mph)  & Max Speed needs taken with pinches of salt.

Either do the speeds and measure/time yourself with equipment,

because almost all official figures just get repeated for years and decades.

http://vrsworld.co.uk/skoda_octavia_vrs_specs.html

Here they go with Hatches doing that bit faster than heavier Estates.

http://vrsworld.co.uk/skoda_fabia_vrs_specs.html

Here Skoda/VAG have figures where a lighter car is slower than a heavier one.

& all along they have the lightest one slower than the VW or Seat that are more expensive.

(the Estate is actually fastest in Sprints due to the weight distribution and better traction at the drive wheels. Due to Firmer rear springs)
