ASZ and BLT engines in the mk1 VRS. discuss.

Featured Replies

I was under the impression that all fabia VRS had the ASZ 1.9tdi, but I've just seen that from October '05 they were fitted with the BLT 1.9tdi.

Apart from a few people commenting that they have a slight 'stutter' due to some EGR design issue and apparently more power as standard, thought being 'rated' at the same i can't see much real difference.

I was wondering what is the difference between a BLT and an ASZ?

Why did they swap?

Which engine is the more desirable?

Trying to learn more about the two, so please, discuss away, owners proceed to tell me why your engine is better.

Wondered the same will be interesting to see the answers.

I believe the blt was fitted with the egr to meet emissions?

No real difference - maybe a few bhp and lb/ft in favour of the blt otherwise both solid engines.

my SE was 150bhp stock !

All BLT's make more power as standard that's a fact. The reason for the stutter I don't know but it's something to do with the anti shudder valve on the EGR, very easily fixed I think

ASZ has a normal EGR valve with a mechanical ASV within the EGR

BLT has an EGR valve with an EGR cooler + an electronic ASV (Anti Shudder Valve)

That is the only physical difference other than the slightly different turbo exhaust manifold. The only difference being the EGR pipe mounting bracket is in a different place.

The extra power is just from the standard map from factory being different. After a remap both ASZ + BLT produce the same

Thats pretty much what i was wondering.

Read that the ASZ has a Garrett turbo, the BLT has a KKK and the earlier cars get a longer ratio box.

But the engines remain the same, its just the stuff stuck on the side that changes.

From the sounds of it, with the Garrett, the ASZ is the better one to have.

All Fabias have the KKK unit, the Golf etc was fitted with the Garrett equivalent

+1 on all fabias having the KKK

Out of the two engines, the best one quite simply is the one named after a Sandwich.

That is all! :giggle:

In terms of reliability its the ASZ all day long.

but if you bin all the egr crap off the BLT then theres no more problems than the ASZ

I think there will always be a debate which is better.

I'm just ones of those who does not care, lol.

I have the ASZ and it's just brilliant with 200bhp and 380ftlbs.

The bacon, lettuce and tomato does sound much tastier though !

Simply fit an 11-12mm gasket and it's fine. BLT runs a little more fuel (according to one of Faboka's posts), hence likely produces a little more power. In winter, the BLT warms up sooner and produces toasty heat sooner acording to little bro... Though that tailed off a little when he fitted the 12mm gasket.

The gasket doesnt always cure the stutter.

Skoda have even admitted this. But there hands are tied in terms of the year the facelift was produced + the emmisions rules of the EU. Blanking the EGR/ removing it completely WILL fix the problems BUT Skoda arent allowed to do it or tell you to do it.

If you blank or remove the EGR yourself then all the stuttering/ shuddering at idle will stop and then it will run as smoothly as an ASZ ;)

My Skoda is actually a BLT on 2006 plate. I have a different plate on.

Never suffered with any shuddering.

Just got a nice knock on a mounting somewhere on the o/s front due to bottoming out on a pot hole Sunday.

I had both (a 2005 and a 2007), and the annoying thing about the BLT is the optimistic mpg readings, whereas the ASZ was pretty accurate. The BLT over reads by about 15%.

Different water pump design on a BLT as well, so the block is also different the outlet is smaller and the water seal is on the face of pump rather than on the body

have driven both. the blt I found sounded more like a commonrail than my asz which sounds like an old steam ship or tractor.
