Oil change

Featured Replies

Hi just about to change the oil , oil filter and air filter on my 1,6 fsi , Having done this many times over the years and know what i am doing,  Ordered all from euro parts at what I cosidered to be a good price ( under 40 pounds)

Tried looking under the bonnet for the oil filter and eventually found it, wasn't what I thought it would look like. A few things i would like to know, do I have to remove the floor pan to get to the sump plug, is it worth flushing the engine (40000 miles) and has any body used Machine Marts 1.5 ltr oil extractor at 13 quid and does it do the job, bearing in mind that i'm doing the job on the drive and I'm not getting any younger. Any advice appreciated, Bob

Hey yeah the under tray has to come off but there not that hard to get off a few torx screws around it. I used the oil extractor before and just to see how it done i removed the sump plug after it was done and there was very little oil left over. I change my oil every 6 months just because the miles i do and i use the oil extractor but every 2nd or 3rd oil change ill take the sump plug out and give it a while to drain just to make sure its all cleared out and ill use engine flush every 2yrs. Not sure if it does any good or not but thats how i was taught from my dad when i was younger and it became a habbit.

thanks for that think I will get the oil extractor.

On my 1.8tsi I just park with the LHS on the raised kerb, open up an old wine box to lay on & shimmy under.  Drain nut is accessible without removing undertray.  It's not that hard & I'm old enough to have been around when The Beatles first toured down here.

I hate those syphon things - I really don't think they get the heavy particulate out.

Hi brad, thanks but i'm going to try the syphon . think we must be about the same age as I also saw the beatle tour over here. Like the idea of the wine box,  If you would like to send me a case I'll enjoy the wine then say sod it to the oil change. thanks again - Bob

Mate, I'd send you a case but would you believe it's often cheaper to buy Aussie wine in the UK than it is in AUS?  Certainly that was the case when I was there in 2010 (thank you Southern England for a lovely holiday).

Syphon to pull the majority out, then pull plug and let it drain into a pan.

Stops the gush of hot oil when you pull the plug on a hot sump full of oil, which can often be followed by dropping sump plug into said hot oil.....

Well just finished oil change using the clarke oil extractor. A few things I think members should be aware of:-

1. the pipe supplied is to big to go down the dip stick hole ( had to find thinner pipe)

2. the Vacuum created crushed the bottle they supplied.

Other than that it took a long time to syphon all the oil out pumping all the time, but I didn't have to crawl under the car to remove the under tray and sump plug. And what a sensible place to put an oil filter, I like things that make life easy.

I use a 6l sealey extractor, it comes with different diameter pipes and is made of a rigid plastic that doesn't deform.

Pricey bit of kit at 60 notes though.

It's quick and clean.

I take it you got the engine hot before you changed the oil?

yes hot and flushed - thats the engine not me. To be fair to machine mart thier man did recomend the more expensive extractor but i did'nt know if it was worth it for using once a year. I might go back to complain as I don't think the container should have crushed.

I would go with that, the receiver crushing sounds a pain.

I have a couple of boats and assorted plant that I use the sealey extractor on, its invaluable.

You don't need to remove the undertray to access the drain plug

Hi brad, I haven't looked but everybody tells me the undertray has to come off to get at the drain plug. I will have a good look on my day off if it stops raining. Or is because your upside down in Aus, no offence just my little joke, Bob

mine might be diffrent being a 56 1.9 but my undertray definetly needs to come off. the oil extractor i got i had to change the pipe but that was because it wasnt long enough so i could sit it on the ground to work as a syphon being lower than the sump didnt think it would be a great job sitting higher than the sump. but atleast you got it done.

Wouldn't be the first time I'm wrong.

Makes me wonder if they fir a short undertray in AUS to allow more engine bay venting as VW regard us as a Hot Climate Country.  I know the USA MKV GTI had a short undertray & all the Yanks were buying the extended undertray for better fuel economy.
