poor running

Featured Replies

My son has a 1.3 mpi S reg estate and it has poor running problems, since he bought it 2 months ago. I drove it yesterday and noticed when the engine is running the headlights flicker in time with the engine missing. I also noticed, if the engine is revved the headlights grow brighter.

He has had new spark plugs, air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, head gasket and clutch fitted.

Any ideas what the problem may be?

Thanks.

Jody.

alternator voltage regulator gone? that's the only thing that could make the lights go brighter as the engine speed increases

My MPI misfired when the ignition coil/plug multi lead unit wasn't pushed on properly after changing the plugs. I also had the lights issue but changed the whole alternator as it was rough to turn by hand and had a fair amount of play in.

alternator and/or too old battery.

what voltage you have on battery in the morning (engine stopped)?

then start the engine and measure again the voltage on battery.

I had a similar problem on our 1.3 lx. I replaced the voltage regulator and all was well for a few hundred miles. Then after a 120 mile run when we stopped at home there was a terrible eggy smell. Lifted up the bonnet to see sulphuric acid leaking from the battery. I'd been flashed a few times on the way home but presumed it was the weight in the back lifting the headlights up even tough I had them on the 3 setting. Anyway I put a new alternator and battery on and all is well. If I' d have changed the alternator in the first place I may have saved the cost of a new battery and the voltage regulator. I am no expert but this was my experience. Good luck and I hope you get the problem solved.
