Intermittent Starting issue

Featured Replies

I did a search but found nothing that seemed similar so thought id pick your brains!

It's happened twice in the last 10 days now and would like to get to the bottom of it!
When starting (hot/warm) the car, it sounds like someones filled the engine with rocks and the car judders and it stops turning over, refusing to start, lasts about 3 or 4 seconds before the noises get too nasty to bear. If you leave the key at ign position 2 then try again you get the same issue.
BUT, if you turn it back to 0 then start it itll start fine and run fine! No poor running or anything. Though I have found there's a sound a bit like worn wheel bearings that you can hear when coasting from time to time. and a high pitched metallicy rattle when you change down and hit 2500rpm+ (can hear it ever so slightly when accelerating, but engine noise hides it) Not sure if it is related to the problem or not. Currently under warranty so want to get to the bottom of it ASAP!

Also, maybe related, been having real trouble getting it into reverse or 1st gear, always crunches into reverse whether cold or hot. Did have a new clutch about 5k ago, could something have been put back wrong to affect it?

Hope somebody has an answer! Thanks in advance everyone!

EDIT: Kindly pointed out to me that i forgot the important bits! 1.9 Tdi (not sure on engine code, its a feb 06 build though)
