Right peeps.I bought a 03 plate vrs few month ago,to cut a long story short its smoking from exhaust quite badly! Its OK when cold,as soon as its up to temp it smokes when sitting about in traffic,and then when you take off its reekn everywhere! It OK on normal driving and seems to boost well. My first thots we're the turbos on road out,then some folk say valve stems but I that they smoked wen cold? Herd folk talkn about PCV pipes,share are these and how do u check them?? I gave turbo a fingering last night and it seems OK but that doesn't rule out the turbo seals? It also became worse since I fitted decat\downpipe I think. 130k on clock. Any input would be apriciated guys....

Has your coolant level dropped at all?

oil level?

any overheating issues?

What colour is the smoke?

Coolant level is perfect,does use a wee bit of oil,top up every cupla week mibi? The smoke seems blueish I'm prity sure so think it is oil...

Valve stem seals or turbo seals.

Seconded on valve stem or turbo seals. If it's blue it's burning oil...

Well there to two things i thought most to be honest! But how do i diagnose it to be 1 or the other? I dont want the hassle of removing a turbo,getn it recond, fitting it and its still the same. Vice versa with taking head of and striping that down to replace valve stems for it to be turbo??!! :(:'(

The thing thats making hink more turbo is jst the amount of reek! Its not just a little bit,its realy bad! Would you get this much reek from valve stem seals??

The fact you are getting more smoke when you fitted decat / downpipe indicates you are working turbo, engine harder as the spool up is more intense.

 

Personally I am thinking turbo..... 

 

As you get lot's of smoke on boost.

 

remove intercooler pipes and check it they have lot's of oil in it. Then it's turbo

 

When you say you fingered Turbo ( still laughing at that ... :rofl: ) did it have a lot of play? (god still laughing)

 

Also worn valve seals do normally smoke straight away at start up and when car is left and restarted as the oil has dripped through the seal and is sitting in the combustion chamber

 

The fact the the car boosts well indicate no split hoses or pipes. But a turbo with worn seals  will still boost well , up to the point it goes bang.....

 

As you say blue smoke then it is oil related.

Hi mate, sory mibi i read ur lasf post wrong but the car does not smoke atal on boost. The play in turbo is jst the usual cuple of mm i was ,no in n out play. Al mibi take intercooler pipes of n have a look,the only reason i never is bcoz i was under the impresion if it was turbo it would be leaking in2 the exhaust side,not through pipes

From my own personal experience when I first bought mine in jan, it was ok at first then day 3 it started smoking at idle.. yet if I held throttle the smoke cleared up until I left it idle again.

It got to the point where I could be at the lights and a wave of smoke would pass by lol

(Not funny at the time!!)

Anyway, you can smell if its oily or fuely... mine stunk of burnt oil and used a ltr in the week or so it took me to find a new turbo...

In my case turbine seals were shot, fins were bent, shaft play in every direction and wastegate was white!!
