Steering wheel warning light

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, driving to work this am and coming off a roundabout my steering suddenly felt strange and a yellow warning light came up in the rev counter dial, driving a bit furter and taking a corner at low speed the steering wheel felt slightly stiffer and did not return to centre smoothly, any idea what this could be, i've called a garage and there going to call me back..

I dunno but I'd get that checked out quickly.

it could be low oil in the power steering warning but didn't know awarning light was fitted.

When my rear wheel sensor went i had this light on and the 3 usual brake lights had on vcds came up no fault i had same wheel did not centre it cured itself after i did a full lock on wheel both ways and light just went off, its a very strange sensation to say the least and scared the **** out of me.

just went to the car park and tried lock to lock manouvering round the the car park and the light still shows ;-( where does the power steering fluid go as i cannot see a bottle. I also thought that the power steering is some sort of electrical mechanical system and that it differs from other systems..

Your right  I was  wrong the steering is what they call electromachanical power steering.  The handbook says the light comes on for a few seconds when you turn on the ignition.

If the yellow light  comes on then there is a partial failure and the steering forces are greater.

If the Red light comes on then there is a complete failure and the steering has much greater forces, there should also be three peeps sound as an aditional warning.

The hand book also says that you can still steer the vehicle but with much more effort. Sorry for the error hope this helps.

Needs to be scanned to see why the light is on, dealer, independent garage or a local member with VCDS.

Until that is done we are all just guessing.

Haven't heard from the Garage yet so i might just call out the AA as i'm sure they have scanners..

Don't take it to Skoda, whatever you do. I reputable Indy is your best bet, if you can find one, that is.

And good luck for any help on here regarding warning lights, cause I couldn't find any.

Oh well the AA man had a scanner, just not one that could read steering problems, he mentioned that as the warning was a yellow light i could drive the car but needed to be aware that it could get worse and take it easy..

Drove out of the car park and the warning light went out ?. Anyhow dropped it into the garage and for £20 there diagnostics said that the error is ' steering angle sensor fault' the light has stayed out since and the car drove home fine..

Steering angle sensor has lost it's adaptation.  I'd suggest you get your battery checked & associated terminals / wiring / grounding while exploring other avenues.  Just a guess.

IIRC, you had to do the adaptation (L, R, C then R,L,C while moving - not stationary) then do a G85 adaptation & then the limit stops.  You need VCDS for some of this.

It certainly isn't low oil -- the power steering on the Octavia is electric, not hydraulic, so there isn't any oil in the system at all!

The warning light is a two colour light depending on what fault code is stored. It may be a fault with the steering angle sensor, or with the steering column controller itself.

The only way of finding out what the fault code is would be to plug the car into VCDS and look in controllers 16 (steering wheel) and 44 (steering assist), until you do this you will not know what the fault is.

The fact the steering didn't self-centre suggests to me that the steering angle sensor has lost its adaptation, which hopefully could be restored with VCDS. I have just this evening changed my steering column controller again on the 54 plate, and had a few issues adapting the steering stop sensor -- it is interesting to note that Ross Tech's wiki's information about the adaptation talks about turning the wheel left, then right, then centre, but on my car this refused to work, and I only succeeded in the adaptation, and the light going out, after turning the wheel right, then left, and then centre.

Well i guess the 1st step is to find someone with VCDS near me in Staines, or west london and go from there. I'll try the Adaption today  and see if there's any difference anyhow. With regards the battery, the AA guy checked that as he said that if the battery was not charging correctly it can generate errors however that was fine.

I also had new tyres fitted on the rear last week and looking at them in the car park they might be over-inflated, i'll pop down and check the pressures later, however would have thought i'd have had this problem last week if there was any link..
