Too noisy?

Featured Replies

Me and my new Skoda getting on great guns. Feels great on the motorway and averaging just under 60mpg. However it does seem a bit noisy, grunty even, when getting moving in 1st and 2nd, almost agricultural, but not blowing like an exhaust issue, quiet as anything when cruising, is this normal?

My car is like that. I have the 1.6 fsi and driving around 30mph plus starts sounding more like a diesel.

It's a known thing, especially with the PD 1.9. There are a lot of folk on here who actually prefer the grunting of the PD over the newer CR engines.

Both my 1.9's are exactly the same.

Yup, same here. As Mike says, I quite like the sound of the PD engine and in three years of ownership, it's been a cracking motor.

I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

FP.

I love the sound of my PD! I think it's how diesels *should* sound :D

It's always on my mind, owning a 2006 PD105.

Can't help but think VW had a surplus of WWII half track engines stashed somewhere!

I heard a lovely sound by comparison the other week, an old Peugeot with XUD lump.

It turned my head when I heard it start up and drive off, I miss my old 405.

When I test drove Matilda my first thought on the engine was: I sound like a tractor

The word "agricultural" also came to mind.

Got to admit that like the other posters I now really like it. It is the car equivalent of having a slightly muddy fit dog chamber from its basket, shake itself and sit by the door wagging it's tail.

My PD 1.9 is a bit noisy (so bought an old Lexus for long trips). However, I prefer the noise my engine makes to the sound of a service manager raiding my wallet for a new DPF

I think the very low 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears probably make the 1.9 TDI 4x4 sound noisier than the 2wd models when pulling away/slow speed. Pulling away normally I tend to change out of 1st at about 4-500 rpm more than I did in my MKI or the getaway is embarrassingly slow. I am still changing up at the same sort of speed, about 10-12 MPH.

I wish mine was averaging 60 mpg. I've managed 44 in mine since I bought it. I can manage low 50s on a long run but I need to stick to 60-65.
